Box Score Waterloo, ON - The Mustangs' persistency through a 5 set match was not enough to lead them to victory over the Waterloo Warriors on November 11th.
The teams were evenly matched and extended several long rallies, one team only leading by a couple of points at a time.
The Mustangs came to a narrow victory over the Warriors in the first set. Western remained ahead at the beginning of the round with a few reception failures by Waterloo. With a few effective attacks the Warriors gain a few points and pull ahead 6-3. The round continued with longer and longer rallies keeping the Mustangs only slightly ahead of the Warriors to lead 19-14. Some effective blocks by the Warriors allow them to catch up, the score totaling 22-20. The Mustangs had a few effective attacks but also a few reception failures, putting Waterloo at only a 2 point deficit as the score sat at 24-22. After two long rallies the Warriors tie the game 24-24. A failed attack and effective rally put the Mustangs ahead 25-24, then another point to win the set.
The second set saw several longer rallies and reception errors by both teams that kept them tied nearly the whole set. The Mustangs go back and forth maintaining a steady tie. With several effective attacks the Warriors continually lead the score increase. Both teams manage to sustain long rallies with a series of very effective blocks. After maintaining only a 2 point deficit, the teams tie it up 20-20. The Warriors make several effective serves pulling them ahead 24-22. The Mustangs rallied it out of bounds, handing the round to the warriors 25-22.
During the third set the mustangs suffered several miss serves. However, they rallied to keep the play alive. Western seemed to find success in the back court, attacking effectively from the back line. Despite this effort they maintained a tie with the Warriors, 7-7. Waterloo attack failures brought the mustangs ahead 15-13. A series of reception failures but Waterloo back in the game, though Western stayed ahead 21-20. With several effective attacks the Mustangs stay ahead 24-22. However, several reception failures stop the Mustangs from claiming the round, tying the teams 24-24. Waterloo blocked the mustangs' rally and make another effective attack, winning the round in its final moments.
Though Waterloo started the fourth set strong, the mustangs kept them tied at 8-8. Western ate up the spin serves but reception errors put the warriors ahead 11-10. The teams remained neck and neck. Evan Hammond and Matt Hooker held several blocks. The Mustangs offense kept up a rally, pulling them ahead to win the set 25-18 and pushing enthusiastically into the fifth set.
An impressive defensive rally kept the ball in the court on the Mustang's side. Despite Western's extensive defensive efforts, Waterloo pulled ahead with several successive kills, pulling ahead 8-3. Though Western pushed back, several effective serves pulled the Warriors ahead to win the final set 15-6 claiming the game.
Western will return home to Alumni Hall to face the Toronto Varsity Blues this Friday November 16th at 8:00pm.
