London, ON – Five goals from five different Mustang players would send Western soaring past the Brock Badgers on Saturday night at Thompson Arena.
With the Badgers sitting in second place, the Mustangs were preparing for a tough game. "Every game is in this league is a battle, we know that," said assistant coach Patrick Ouellet. "Whether you play the first place team or the last place team, if you don't play well, you're not going to win."
Western looked to use last night's win as momentum for this evening's game, while Brock looked to extend their four game winning streak to five.
Western's offence would be evenly distributed through the team with goals by Ethan Szypula, Anthony Stefano, Kolten Olynek, Rylan Bechtel and Matthew Watson. The lone goal by the Badgers was contributed by Adam Lloyd.
Brock would have the first power-play opportunity of the game 12 minutes into the first period after Mustangs captain Jonathan Laser took a cross-checking penalty in the defensive zone.
Mustangs net-minder Luke Peressini made a clutch blocker save after a Brock stretch pass split the Western defence, keeping the score at 0-0 after the penalty was finished.
With 3:38 left in the first frame, the Mustangs would have a chance to put a power-play goal on the board. A shot from the point by Szypula would ring loudly in the ears of Brock goalie Logan Thompson after it ricocheted off the post. But, Szypula would have another attempt at a goal after receiving a pass from Cordell James at the top of the circles, disrupting the Brock penalty kill and netting the first goal of the game.
Just two minutes later, a faceoff win from Mustangs centre-man Kolten Olynek would allow Stefano to walk in from inside the hashmarks and send one below the glove of Thompson. "I think their guy kind of jumped early and I was patient and the puck came to me. I was fortunate to get it past the goalie," commented Stefano.
The Mustangs would finish the first period with two goals under their belt, while the Badgers had none.
Brock opened up their scoring in the second period after Badgers forward Adam Lloyd followed-up on a rebound shot by Tyler Rollo.
The Mustangs wouldn't wait long to respond to the Badgers goal after long and fluttery shot by Olynek was fumbled by the Badgers goalie and found its way into the back of the net.
"It was at the end of the shift so I was pretty gassed, I just tried to get the puck on net and it wasn't the hardest shot, but I guess I placed it pretty well," said Olynek.
The 3-1 score would be maintained by both teams when the buzzer sounded the end of the second.
Western came out flying in the third period, putting another goal on the board just 1 minute in. Bechtel would be credited with the point after firing a shot through Thompson. Line-mates Szypula and Trevor Warnaar would pick up the assists.
Western kept the pressure on Brock just two minutes later, extending their lead to four with a long outside shot by Watson that whistled past the Badgers goalie. This would be the last goal scored of the game, giving the Mustangs the two points they wanted at the end of the third. The final score was 5-1, with Western getting their first back-to-back win of the season.
"The guys have been battling, we had some tough ones against some really good teams," said Stefano. "And I thought we showed up and battled and deserved better so it's nice to finally get two wins."
Western will return to the ice on Saturday, November 24 when the Badgers host the Mustangs for a rematch. Fans can catch all the action live,
