St. Catharines, Ont.—Two second period goals secured the Brock Badgers' 2-1 win against Western Saturday afternoon at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.
Renae Nevills scored Western's lone goal of the day. It was her fourth of the season.
Brock's offence was provided by Marissa Ryalls, who scored her first in the OUA, and Amanda Leradi.
The game started with back and forth action, neither team really creating offensive opportunities. At the end of the first frame, Brock had taken 11 shots, and Western had taken 7.
Nine minutes into the first, Beatrice Dufour received the period's only penalty for hooking. The Badgers got to show their league-leading power play, but the Mustangs held their own and limited shots and shot quality.
With two minutes to go, Badger Cassidy Maplethorpe had two close calls on goalie Carmen Lasis, but her tips both went slightly wide.
Ryalls broke the tie two minutes into the second period on the first shot of the frame. Hunter Accursi passed from the top of the circle to the opposite post, and Ryalls shot a one-timer past Lasis.
Nine minutes in, there was a Mustang scramble in front of the Badgers' net. Western rapid fired three shots in a row, but Brock goalie Jensen Murphy protected their lead.
Leradi netted the Badgers' insurance marker with seven minutes left in the second. She skated down the ice along the boards, cut inside of Western's defence, snagged her own rebound and backhanded it over Lasis' left glove.
After a penalty-less period, Brock was on the penalty kill twice in the final frame. Western had several close calls but were unable to capitalize on their power plays.
With six minutes of play left, the Mustangs finally got a puck past Murphy. Renae Nevills scored her second in two nights with help from teammate Jessie Sanghe.
Western pulled Lasis with over two minutes left, but they couldn't hold on to their momentum and make a comeback. Brocks Murphy saw 43 pucks to Lasis' 28, and saving all but one. The Badgers' goalie has the second highest save percentage in the OUA at .962 and is in third for number of saves with 201.
Western remains in first with the loss at 6-2-0-1. Brock moves up one spot in the standings, now tied for fifth, with a record of 3-1-1-1.
The teams will face each other for a rematch Friday at 7pm on Western's home ice. Tune in to OUA.tv to watch the game live.
