Box Score London, ON – A pair of third period goals by Anthony Stefano and Ethan Szypula granted the Western Mustangs a 4-3 win over the Waterloo Warriors Friday night at Thompson Arena.
Waterloo would be looking to extend their one game winning streak, while Western hoped to come back from a tough loss to McGill last weekend.
"Although we played very well last weekend, I thought one of our downfalls was bringing the puck to the net," said Mustangs assistant coach Patrick Ouellet. "So we focused a lot on that during practice this week, and making sure there was more traffic and more pucks, making the goalie's job more difficult."
Western's offence tonight was provided by Trevor Warnaar, Anthony Stefano, and a pair for Ethan Szypula. Waterloo's offensive contributions were supplied by Michael Morgan, Andrew Cordssen-David and Nick Chyzowski.
Mustangs forward Trevor Warnaar would score the first goal of the night, with just less than half of the first period left.
"We had a really good forecheck down low, and the puck just kind out popped out to the side. I was able to get a stick on it and reach around the goalie," said Warnaar on his goal. "It was just a quick play to the far post."
However, despite out-shooting the Warriors in the first period, the Mustangs had some trouble in their defensive zone. Luckily, Mustangs goaltender Luke Peressini was on his game, stopping multiple 2 on 1s and odd-man rushes.
"In the first period we were up by one goal, but I don't think defensively we were good at all," said Ouelette. "As soon as they got control of the puck, it was a disaster in our own end."
Two minutes into the second period, the Mustangs lost a defensive zone faceoff, and Warriors forward Michael Morgan scooped up the puck, sliding it underneath Peressini. Nick Chyzowski would get the assist, tying up the score.
Not shortly after, Warriors defenceman Andrew Cordssen-David blasted a shot from the point above the shoulder of Peressini, giving the Warriors the first lead of the game. The Warriors wouldn't wait long to extend this lead, when Chyzowski netted another goal just 14 seconds later.
Halfway through the second, Ethan Szypula got sent to the penalty box for unsportsmanlike conduct. But serving these two minutes would work in favour for the Mustangs when Szypula stepped out of the box and received a stretch pass from Mustangs captain Jonathan Laser. Szypula snuck the puck past the shoulder of Warriors goaltender Julian Sime on his breakaway, scoring his first of the night.
"I took a funny penalty there throwing my stick over the glass, and was in the box for a bit, but it was a good kill," said Szypula. "I got a nice saucer pass through the neutral zone and sprung me on a breakaway. I was able to tuck it up high on a smaller goalie."
For a majority of the third period, the Mustangs kept the Warriors hemmed in their zone, generating offence. Eight minutes in, Trent Ouellette did some hard battling in the corner to set up a scoring opportunity out front for Anthony Stefano, which he capitalized on. This goal would tie up the score on the clock.
Szypula scored his second goal of the night with nine minutes to go on the third, after a feed out front from linemate Cordell James. "It was good hard work with my linemates. I felt like we had a great game and we were working hard and we were battling in the third. The puck squeaked out and I was lucky to bang it home. It was a good team effort and a great third by everybody," said Szypula.
This goal gave the Mustangs the go-ahead for the win, finishing the game with a 4-3 victory. Despite the two points however, Mustangs coaching staff are expecting more out of the boys for tomorrows match-up against Laurier.
"We got the win today, maybe we didn't deserve it. Hopefully we come back with more intensity and better puck management," said Ouelette.
The Mustangs will return to home ice on Saturday, November 3 when they host the Laurier Golden Hawks. Fans can catch all the action live,
