Rams overtake Mustangs in Toronto

TORONTO, Ont. - Another impressive showing from the Ryerson Rams helped cement their dominance as they took home a 39-72 win over the Western Mustangs in Toronto on Saturday night.

The loss updates Western's record to 1-8 on the year, falling into last place in the OUA West. Ryerson's record was improved to 9-0 as their flawless record helps them maintain first place in the OUA.

Although the team struggled on the offensive end, players Laura Graham and Kennedy Heggie were able to break double digits for the purple and white, putting up 12 and 11 points, respectively. Debora Kamba had yet another stellar night on the defensive end, recording 4 steals alongside 8 rebounds and 2 assists; Kamba moving up to third in the OUA for steals.

As the first quarter began, both teams went back and forth to exchange leads several times - neither being able to pull ahead in the first couple of minutes. However, with a 8-1 run coming from the Rams in the final 3 minutes, they were able to create a small gap, with the Mustangs trailing 9-17 heading into the second quarter.

With the advent of another run from Ryerson, the scored 7 straight points to open the second frame. Western struggled to solve the defence of the Rams, falling into a shooting slump as they attempted to catch back up. As the fatigue of a shortened lineup began becoming more prominent. Ryerson used this to their advantage and further separate themselves; the Mustangs falling to 15-47 at the end of the half.

Graham came alive in the second half, scoring 10 of her points as Western mounted a much-needed comeback. Unfortunately the gap was simply too large to close, the Mustangs falling 36-72.

The Mustangs will be back in action this Friday November 30, where they face off against the Nippising Lakers for their first meeting of the season. The game is scheduled to tip off at 6:00 P.M. EST and fans can catch the action live on OUA.tv.
