Toronto, ON—Carmen Lasis secured another shutout with the Mustangs' 4-0 win against the Ryerson Rams Saturday afternoon at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
Western's offence was provided by April Clark, Evra Levesque, and Jessie Sanghe. Clark now has 10 season goals and leads the league as top scorer by a full two points.
It was a special teams first period as five penalties were called, with some overlapping to create a lot of four on play and open up the ice.
The Mustangs took advantage of one of their power plays, and Clark scored the first of the night unassisted. Six minutes into the frame, she grabbed a rebound and beat Rams' goaltender Fanny Vigeant.
Five minutes into the second, Camryn Tait made a great shorthanded effort and took on three Western defenders to kill off the end of their roughing penalty. Shortly after, the Rams almost secured a scoring opportunity. Captain Kryshanda Green rushed to the net with defenders on her tail, but Lasis snatched her backhanded shot out of the air.
Clark netted her second of the night on a rush play nine minutes into the frame. Evra Levesque skated up the right side of the ice to bring Vigeant over, and at the last second she passed it across the ice to Clark. As Vigeant slid back, Clark fired a low shot to the open far side.
Western's deadliest line struck again with two minutes left. Clark and Shailyn Waites helped Levesque take advantage of loose play in front of the net as she knocked in a rebound to give Western a three-point lead.
The Rams had five power play opportunities in the final frame, including a stretch of almost three minutes at the beginning, but they could not capitalize.
Clark was denied a hat trick four minutes in, when she broke down the ice while shorthanded. It was one of many examples of Western's aggressive penalty kills.
One minute later, Sanghe stole the puck and rushed down the ice. Ryerson's defence couldn't pin her down; she made a move and beat Vigeant to score shorthanded.
After the goal, it was back and forth play, neither team securing many good offensive opportunities. Although the Rams outshot Western 39-22, they just couldn't beat goalie Carmen Lasis, and the game ended in a 4-0 win for the Mustangs.
With the victory, Western's record is at 7-2-0-2, overtaking Ryerson in the standings to sit in second. The Rams have lost their five game winning streak and are at 6-3-2-0. They now count 11 straight losses to the Mustangs.
The Mustangs are back in Toronto Friday night for their 7pm match up against the York Lions. Fans can tune into OUA.tv to catch the action live.
