SUDBURY, Ont. - Second-year forward
Deborah Kamba once again led the Western women's basketball team with 15 points in the team's 76-59 road loss to the Laurentian Voyageurs on Saturday evening.
With the loss, the Mustangs drop to 1-10 on the season, as they remain in ninth in the OUA West division standings. The Voyageurs' victory improves their record to 3-7 on the year, placing them in seventh in the OUA East division.
Kamba, who led the way last night with 14 points against the Nipissing Lakers, notched a double-double against the Voyageurs, securing 10 rebounds, three assists, and three steals to go along with her point production.
Laura Graham also had a big game for the purple and white, scoring 15 points and grabbing five rebounds in the loss while first-year
Melanie Cloutier chipped in 11 points on the night.
Emily Tinnes spearheaded Laurentian's offence in the win, scoring a game-high 21 points while totaling an incredible seven steals along the way.
Just as they did the night prior against the Lakers, the Mustangs scored with good pace throughout the opening frame, finding points on the fast break and earning their way to the free throw line. Western's early scoring surge left them trailing by just a 20-19 margin heading into the second frame.
However, the Mustangs seemed to succumb to fatigue midway through the second quarter, as open shots refused to fall and the pace slowed considerably as the quarter went on. On the other side of the ball, the Voyageurs' constant ball movement and sharp shooting from beyond the arc sparked a 21-8 score-differential in the quarter and a 41-27 lead heading into halftime.
Western's offence continued to struggle in the second half, as the turnovers began to amount for the purple and white while Laurentian found their way to the free throw line on the other end of the floor and converted 21/22 of their chances in the game. The Mustangs maintained their rebounding advantage, moved the ball well, and fought until the final buzzer, but an inability to space the floor and knock down open shots left the Mustangs ending their road trip with a 76-59 loss.
The Mustangs will be out of action until the new year, where they will return home to take on the Brock Badgers in Alumni Hall. The game is scheduled to tip off at 1:00 P.M. EST and fans can catch all the action live on OUA.tv.
