Western eliminated from OUA playoffs with game three loss to Ryerson

TORONTO – The purple and white hunt for the Queen's Cup ended on Sunday evening, when the Ryerson Rams topped the Mustangs by a score of 6-3 to win the best-of-three playoff series.

The Rams will continue of pursuit of the title, slated to play the York Lions next week in round two of the OUA playoffs.

Trevor Warnaar, Kolten Olynek, and Anthony Stefano provided the offence for the Mustangs in the loss, while Huether picked up two assists.

Vince Figliomeni scored two of Ryerson's six goals, while Steven Harland, Erick DeLaurentis, Kyle Tibbo, and John Carpino contributed one each.

Harland's goal came only 24 seconds into the game, after he drove down the ice unassisted to open the game with a strong statement from the Rams.

He would pick up another point a couple minutes later when he earned the primary assist on Ryerson's second goal of the night. The goal was a result of high traffic in front of the Western net that saw both teams swarming the crease.

Harland picked up the puck behind the net and sent it forward where it deflected off a Mustang skate. DeLaurentis was in position to grab the rebound and only needed a light tap to direct the puck into an open net.

Ryerson's forecheck had the Mustangs trapped in their own zone for the majority of the period, but Western made the most of the opportunities they had.

Western would throw as much as they could towards the Rams' net throughout the first only to come up empty-handed. Goaltender Taylor Dupuis handled 11 shots in total to keep the Mustangs scoreless for the first 20 and end the frame with two goal lead for Ryerson.

The Mustangs would spend more time in Ryerson's end as the match wore on, but the Rams were able to keep Western off the board. Just as they did in the first period, the Rams went on a short offensive tear in the final minutes of the period that saw them rack up two goals in less than three minutes.

Tibbo fired the puck past Luke Peressini just before the 14-minute mark, while a Mustangs turnover two minutes later would lead to Ryerson's fourth of the night. Figliomeni stripped the puck away from a purple and white skater near Western's net and only needed a few strides before he was in prime position to extend the Rams lead.

Warnaar – fresh off a hat trick in Friday's contest against Ryerson – spoiled Dupuis' shutout early in the third period after capitalizing on a shot that rebounded off the goaltender's pad. Spenser Cobbold took the initial shot, allowing Warnaar to notch the first Mustang goal of the night.

Olynek and Stefano would also contribute to the purple and white scoreboard, but the Ryerson offence continued their effective high-pressure play to put up another two goals throughout the period.

Carpino bested Peressini with a top-shelf shot from the slot, while Figliomeni would score his second of the game with 14 seconds remaining. His marker was the final goal of the night, allowing the Rams to take a 6-3 win on home ice.
