Mustangs finish regular season with matchups against York, Waterloo

2/6/2018 1:09:00 PM

Coming off a big 3-0 win on the road against the York Lions, Western will head into their last weekend of regulation play on a four game win streak. The Mustangs will round out the season with a rematch against the Lions on Friday, and a game against the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday.

The Mustangs currently sit second in the OUA, and have been ranked tenth in the country for the third straight week. Western has a 13-2-5-2 record, and are only three points back of the Queen's Gaels for first in the OUA.

Evra Levesque had a goal and two assists for the Mustangs this past weekend. The goal was Levesque's tenth of the season, and she currently sits in seventh in the OUA for most goals. Levesque is now only one goal behind team leader April Clark.

Carmen Lasis' steady play has seen her continue to rise in the OUA rankings as one of the leagues best goaltenders. The rookie net-minder currently has a .937 save percentage, and has a 1.55 goals against average, putting her in fourth in the OUA.

Meanwhile, the Mustangs power play continues to be the best in the OUA, coming in at a 21.4% success rate. The purple and white added another power play goal to their total this weekend, with 18 on the season.

Western vs York Lions – Friday, February 9th at 7:00 p.m.

The Mustangs will play host to the York Lions to start off the weekend, in a rematch of last weekend's 3-0 win for the Mustangs. With three games left on the schedule, the Lions are firmly out of the playoff picture, sitting in 11th in the OUA with a 6-0-12-3 record.

The Lions have a chance to play spoiler to the Mustangs playoff position, as the third place Guelph Gryphons nip at their heels in the standings, only one point back.

Despite only scoring 34 so far this season, the Lions offense is capable of sustaining pressure in the offensive zone. On average, the team generates 27.7 shots per game, providing ample work for opposing goalies.

Taylor Davison and Kelsey McHolm provide the offense for the Lions, with each contributing ten points this season to the team. Davison has four goals and six assists, while McHolm has seven goals and three assists.

This will be the last time these two teams meet this season, with the opportunity for the Mustangs to sweep the season series over the Lions.

Western at Waterloo Warriors – Saturday, February 10th, at 7:00 p.m.

The Waterloo Warriors will be heading into Saturday's on the second half of a back-to-back, after paying a visit to Windsor the night before. The Warriors are 8-3-9-0 so far this season, and sit in a precarious playoff position in eighth place, with Laurentian only one point behind them.

With four games left on their schedule, the Warriors will be fighting for their lives, and looking to earn every point they can in the standings.

Despite their low standing in the OUA, the Warriors are not to be underestimated. The team is coming off of a huge 4-1 win over the first place Queen's Gaels this past weekend, proving that they can compete with the top teams in the league.

Statistically speaking, Waterloo tends to be middle of the pack, with their power play, penalty kill, and save percentage all coming out to the league average.

Stephanie Digness spearheads the Waterloo offense, with six goals and six assists for 12 points. Maryn Cargata rounds out the offense, with 11 points of her own, while Amy Barnard and Emma Pye have ten of their own.

This will be the second, and last, meeting between these two teams, with the Mustangs claiming a 3-0 victory at home earlier this season.
