Mustangs wrap up season opening weekend with 0-0 draw against Guelph

GUELPH, Ont. – The Western Mustangs and Guelph Gryphons faced off for the first time since the 2017 OUA Final on Sunday afternoon, with the hard-fought matchup ending in a 0-0 draw at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

The draw gives Western an undefeated record for their opening weekend after defeating the York Lions by a 5-2 score on Friday night in Toronto. Guelph also remains undefeated following a 2-0 win over Windsor in the Gryphons season opener.

Just as their matchup for OUA gold was back in November, Sunday's contest proved to be a closely contested affair with neither side able to solve the other through 90 minutes. Megan Girardi and Libby Brenneman each recording a clean sheet for the Mustangs and Gryphons respectively, with both keepers making one save in the game.

The Gryphons held a slight shot edge over the Mustangs, outshooting their opponents 5-3, however the two sides were even in shots on goal with one apiece.

Next up for the Mustangs is the team's home opener as they are set to welcome the McMaster Marauders to campus on Friday, August 31. Western held the edge on McMaster last season, defeating them both at home and on the road, and they'll be looking to do the same this Friday when game time is set for 1 p.m. at Mustangs Field.
