Mustangs surge in the 4th quarter to top Queens

Western was back on the road, this time in Kingston to take on the rival Queens Gaels.

The Mustangs have had the best of the Gaels in the last several years, having to go back to 2011 to find the last time Queens beat Western.

Queens put immediate pressure on the Western defence in the 1st quarter to force a punt and immediately made an impact on the offensive side of the ball.

Nate Hobbs aired out a 50 yard pass to Chris Osei-Kusi but the Mustangs only allowed a rouge when Queens missed a field goal.

On the next possession Chris Merchant threw to Harry McMaster which brought Western into the red zone.

The Mustangs got the ball to the 1 yard line and Cedric Joseph punched the ball in the end zone to make it a 7-1 game for Western.

The Gaels responded late in the 2nd quarter when Nate Hobbs ran the ball in for a score to put Queens ahead with their first touchdown of the game to make the score 11-8.

Before halftime the Mustangs were able to get the ball deep in Gaels territory and Marc Liegghio kicked a field goal to tie the game at 11 at half-time.

Queens took advantage of a few mistakes in the 3rd quarter and were able to put another major on the board when Nate Hobbs ran the ball in for the second time on the day to take the score to 18-11 for Queens.

Queens would add a field-goal and a safety to extend their lead to 23-12.

Western responded when Alex Taylor got the hand off from Merchant and ran the ball for a 20-yard TD and closed the scoring gap to 23-18 mid-way through the 4th quarter after a missed extra point.

The Mustangs kept the foot on the pedal as Merchant saw an opening with under 3 minutes left in the game and ran the ball in from 12 yards out and allowed Western to regain the lead and then added a 2-point convert.

That score held up as the winning play as the Mustangs came back in the 4th quarter to take a 26-23 win over a very tough Queens Gaels team who battled tooth and nail all day long.

With the win the Mustangs move to 5-0 on the season and stay in 1st place overall in the OUA standings, Queens drops to 3-3.

The Mustangs only have a few days until their next action as they will welcome the Windsor Lancers to TD Stadium Thursday night for a 7pm kickoff.
