LONDON, Ont. - First-year Sebastian Fischer earned his first and second goals in his first game with the Mustangs to help the Western men's soccer team to a 6-0 victory over the Algoma Thunderbirds on Saturday afternoon on Mustangs Field.
With the win, the Mustangs improve to 4-3-3 on the season and will remain in sixth place in the OUA West division standings. The Thunderbirds' loss will keep them searching for their first win of the season as they drop to 0-8-1 on the year and sit at the bottom of the OUA West division.
Fischer's goals were monumental on the day, despite the blowout, as they took place in his first game in Canada after arriving from Germany as an exchange student. Four other Mustangs scored on the day, as Anthony Chrysanthou, Mark Serjeant, Belal Halbouni, and Kairav Juta all found the back of the net to help Western to the win.
"Sebastian is a very talented player and he gave us a great effort out there today, so obviously we're happy to have him," said Mustangs head coach Martin Painter. "We hope that he can keep up this level of production because he's already proven to be a huge addition for us."
"It felt very good to be able to score so early with the team, I really didn't expect that coming into today," said Fischer. "It's been a really great experience with the team so far. We all get along so well and spend a lot of time together, so it makes my move here so much easier."
Western earned an early scoring opportunity to begin the match but the Algoma defence would break up the attack early in the half. However, Western's efforts were eventually rewarded as Chrysanthou netted the first goal of the game to give the purple and white the 1-0 lead 20 minutes into the match. The Mustangs extended their lead minutes later when Serjeant scored to give Western the 2-0 advantage. Another goal from Halbouni secured Western a 3-0 lead heading into the half.
Western continued their dominance in the second half, as Fischer scored to extend the Mustangs' lead to 4-0 midway through the half. The Mustangs' Fischer scored his second of the day in the final 10 minutes, followed by one from Juta minutes later to give Western the eventual 6-0 victory.
"We still have to master playing full 90-minute games," said head coach Martin Painter. "Our first 10 minutes weren't at the level we want to be at and I was hoping for more urgency. We're happy with the result, but we're going to use tomorrow as another opportunity to grow."
The Mustangs will be back in action tomorrow, Sunday, September 29 where they will host a rematch with the Thunderbirds on Mustangs Field. The game is set to begin at 2:15 P.M. EST.
