Gael’s distributed offence beats Mustangs

KINGSTON, Ont.--Western lost 5-2 to Queen's after a high scoring second period Friday night at the Kingston Memorial Centre.

The Mustangs' goals were scored by Claire Balas and Alyssa Chiarello, marking their first and sixth goals of the season.

The Gaels' offence was provided by Alex Maw, Caroline DeBruin, Katrina Manoukarakis, and Taylor Hicks. Manoukarakis tallied two goals, leading her team offensively with eight total. The five-goal game was the highest scoring one of Queen's season.

Halfway through the first frame, Western received the first penalty of the night. They displayed an impressive penalty kill: their defence kept Queen's near the boards, cleared the zone three times, and only allowed one shot on Carmen Lasis with a few seconds to go.

Although the Mustangs outshot the Gaels 8-4 in the first, it was the latter who scored. With six minutes left, Maw shot almost from behind Lasis' net, sneaking the puck past the post and her skates.

Five minutes into the second frame, Hannah De Coutere fed the puck to Hailey Wilson who was sitting in front of Lasis. DeBruin picked up her failed backhand and shot it past Lasis, who was stuck on the other side of Wilson.

With eight minutes left, Manoukarakis capitalized on the Gaels' power play. She deked around Jessie Sanghe to get closer to the net and marked a top corner goal.

Hicks intercepted Western's pass out of the defensive zone with three minutes left in the second. She scored on the turnover to bring the Gaels to a 4-0 lead.

With 30 seconds left on the clock, Balas got the Mustangs on the board. She received the puck from Shana Alexander and fired it past Stephanie Pascal.

Halfway through the final frame, Manoukarakis netted her second of the night. In the confusion in front of the net, Lasis went down on the ice, and Manoukarakis shot the puck just past her reach.

Western got the last word, however, as Chiarello scored with one minute of play left. While on the power play, she made a quick release with traffic in front of the net to beat Pascal, ending the game with a 5-2 loss for the Mustangs.

Western's record is 10-3-0-4 with the loss. They remain in second place, three points behind Guelph. Queen's sits at 10-7-0-0, moving from the middle of the pack to fourth in the OUA.

The Mustangs are headed to Oshawa tomorrow to face UOIT at 3:30pm. Fans can catch the action live at OUA.tv
