Gryphons five goal third period tops Mustangs

GUELPH, Ont. – The Mustangs suffered a 7-1 loss to the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday night at the Gryphon Centre Arena.

The lone goal for Western was provided by Kenny Huether. Goals for the Gryphons came from Justin Lemcke, Michael Stevens, Cody Thompson, Seth Swenson, Jesse Saban, and a pair from Marc Stevens.

Coming back from a gritty win against York on Friday, the Mustangs looked to grab another two points, while Guelph tried to inch their way out of their tie with Laurier for 7th place.

In tonight's match-up, Guelph struck first. Eight minutes into the first frame, Lemcke pulled a spin-o-rama move in the high slot, catching Mustangs' goalie David Ovsjannikov moving the wrong way.

The Gryphons led the Mustangs 1-0 after the end of the first period.

The team extended their one goal lead to two after a successful three on two, where Nick Boyer dished the puck to linemate Michael Stevens who skated into the slot and found the back of the net behind Ovsjannikov.

A scramble in front of the Guelph net led to a late second period goal from Kenny Huether, which helped to tighten up the score to 2-1. Anthony Stefano and Trevor Warnaar were credited for the assists.

The Gryphons came out flying at the start of the third period, netting five goals over the course of the 20 minutes. The first came from Thompson, who was left by himself on Ovsjannikov's backdoor, taking his time before he found the back of the net.

Seven minutes later, Marc Stevens would net his first of the night, and shortly after his second as well.

Swenson and Saban also helped to get the score on the board up, and by the end of the third period, the Gryphons had seven goals to show, while the Mustangs hadn't seen the back of the net since the second period.

Western is placed third in the West at 13-8-1-1. Guelph is tied for fifth place at 9-10-3-3.

The Mustangs will look to bounce back from the game next Friday at 7pm when they face Ryerson at Thompson arena. Fans can catch all the action live, at OUA.tv.
