NORTH BAY, Ont. – The Western Mustangs' 3-1 triumph over the Nipissing Lakers was a team effort Friday night at Memorial Gardens.

Western's offence was provided by Shailyn Waites, April Clark, and Hannah Irwin. Nipissing's lone gone was scored by Kaitlyn McManus.

Five minutes into the first frame, the Lakers led the shots 4-0. However, a few minutes later, Western's first shot of the game passed the goal line. The Mustangs broke down the ice, and Waites knocked in a rebound to count her third goal of the season.

Nipissing tied it up with a minute and a half to go. McManus, with help from Maria Dominico and Sam Strassburger, beat goaltender Carmen Lasis. The Lakers finished the period with 10 shots to Western's four.

The Mustangs re-took the lead five minutes into the second frame. Sydnee Baker fed the puck to Clark, who marked her 18
th goal of the season, further extending her position as league leader in points.

The first penalty of the game went to Western seven minutes into the period. Nipissing almost scored on a wide-open net with their power play set-up, but the Laker shooter fired the puck wide, and Lasis slid over to cover it. The Mustangs had a power play opportunity soon after finishing their penalty kill. They kept play in the Lakers' end, but they could not secure a scoring opportunity.

With four minutes left in the second frame, Irwin scored Western's insurance marker and her first OUA goal unassisted. The Mustangs' two goal period could be attributed to their 14 shots on Danika Ranger, compared to the Lakers' six on Lasis.

The Mustangs started off the final frame on the penalty kill but managed to protect their 3-1 lead for the remainder of the game. Four minutes in, Nipissing was outshooting Western 5-0 to try and break Lasis. The Mustangs' goalie saved all nine shots during the third period, and Western did not score on any of their five shots either.

The Mustangs are in a tie for first place in the OUA with Guelph and have a record of 12-3-0-4 with 40 points. Nipissing is tied for third with Queen's at 7-6-5-2, only two points behind second place team Ryerson with 33 points.
