THUNDER BAY, Ont. - Fourth-year guard
Maddy Horst put up a team-high 13 points to go along with six rebounds and a pair of steals to lead the Western women's basketball team in a 97-60 road loss to the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Friday evening.
The Mustangs' loss broke up what was a four-game winning streak for the purple and white, as they now hold a 5-12 record and sit eighth in the OUA West division standings. The Thunderwolves' victory improved their record to an impressive 13-4 record on the season, as they sit in second in the OUA West.
Leashja Grant, who has had the Mustangs' number since she began her OUA career last season, led the way for the Thunderwolves the entire evening. Grant kicked off the scoring in the first quarter, dominating the boards and finding points in the paint to spark the Lakehead offence. However, a disciplined scoring display by the purple and white throughout the frame left the trailing just 24-16 heading into the second.
Both teams continued to score in bunches throughout the second quarter, with a number of Lakehead shooters beginning to heat up from beyond the arc and
Laura Graham scoring efficiently to keep Western's offence afloat. However, Grant continued to dominate until the end of the half, scoring 22 points before the halftime buzzer to lift her team to a 51-36 lead heading into the third.
Horst began to heat up in the second half, but fatigue seemed to plague the rest of the purple and white in the final two quarters of play, as the rest of the team struggled to find the bottom of the net. Grant continued her dominance until the final buzzer, totaling an incredible 29 points and 12 rebounds to carry her team to the eventual 97-60 victory.
The Mustangs will be back in action Saturday, January 26, where they will once again match up against Grant and the Thunderwolves on the road. The game is scheduled to tip off at 6:00 P.M. EST and fans can catch all the action live on OUA.tv.
