A back and forth game between the Mustangs and University of Toronto Varsity Blues ended as a 3-2 Toronto win with a lot of frustration from Western after a goal was waved off in the shootout.
Â
After both teams scored on their initial shootout attempts,
Sydnee Baker made her move towards the Toronto net, shot the puck which hit the post and then off the Toronto goaltender and in the net. Referee Josh Ackworth immediately waved off the goal. "Once the puck hit the post it's dead" Mustangs Head Coach
Candice Moxley was told of the play "Looked it up in the book obviously, never heard it or seen it, that one is new to me".
Â
Baker didn't mix words when giving her feelings on the play, "I think he needs to look over his rulebook because he made a bad call there".
Â
The puzzling end came after a quality game between the two clubs.
Â
Toronto opened the scoring in the 1
st period. After the Mustangs were called for tripping, Cristine Chao fired a clean shot from the blue line into the top corner of the Western net to take a 1-0 lead and the lead through 20 minutes.
Â
The Varsity Blues burst out of the gate in the 2
nd period. Just 16 seconds into the frame Kassie Roache got the puck at the side of the Mustangs net and beat
Carmen Lasis under the glove to make it a 2-0 Toronto lead.
Â
The Mustangs would respond nearing the mid-way point of the period.
April Clark picked up a pass off the boards from
Claire Balas, deked around Toronto goalie Erica Fryer and tucked the puck in to cut the Varsity Blues lead to 2-1. Clark now has 13 goals on the season and lead the OUA in goals scored.
Â
Carmen Lasis kept the Mustangs in the game with several big saves including a pair in the 2
nd period. With 7:06 remaining she made a dazzling post to post save on a cross ice pass by the Varsity Blues. Later on, with 2:31 left she made a point blank save right in front of the net to keep the score at 2-1.
Â
"When you have a strong goaltender you're in the game every single night" Moxley stated of Lasis. "She's been a rock for us, we didn't help her by any means tonight, but she still kept us in the game."
Â
It would prove valuable as 5:45 into the 3
rd period the Mustangs would get a fortunate bounce.
Anthea Lasis's shot rebounded right into the blue paint and
Shana Alexander would get the tap in past Fryer and tie the game at 2's.
Â
In overtime with 33 seconds left
Beatrice Arsenault Dufour was called for interference, her 3
rd penalty of the night. "I feel like I get a lot of those penalties being a taller, bigger player" Dufour said post game. "Especially with girls hockey there is all different sizes and shapes of players. Being one of the taller players I often seem to run into another player and end up being the one on my feet and they are the one falling. Looks bad on my end, I'm used to it, but it was disappointing to happen in OT when it's such an important play."
Â
The Mustangs will try to shake off this loss and look towards next weekend when they host Laurentian & Nipissing. "Those are 2 tough competitors we haven't seen yet so it's going to be a lot of video breakdown on my part and we need to be ready to compete and skate in practice, so we are ready to do it in a game" Moxley said of the upcoming games.
Â
The Mustangs move to 8-2-0-4 after the overtime loss and Toronto sits at 6-5-1-1.
Â
The Mustangs next game is Saturday, January 12
th against Laurentian at 2:30pm at Thompson Arena. You can watch all the action on OUA.tv
