Mustangs top Lancers 76-73 to open the season

Windsor, ON – The Mustangs started off the 2019-20 regular season with a 76-73 win on the road to Windsor.

The Mustangs started the 1st quarter pushing the pace, going up 10-4 within the first 5 minutes. After the score stalled for a portion of the middle of the quarter, the Lancers went on a run that saw them pull within two points by the end of the quarter.

Entering the 2nd quarter it was all Mustangs. They went on a 7-0 run to move to a 25-16 lead which caused the Lancers to take a time out and look to regroup. It didn't seem to work as the Mustangs were able to limit any Windsor advance and they held a 34-27 lead at half time.

In the third quarter the Mustangs controlled the pace again, moving to a 42-35 lead four minutes into the frame. The Lancers would then go on a run of their own which stared with a 3 pointer from Windsors Jordan Fullerton. With just over a minute left in the quarter the Lancers would take their first lead of the game on a Kennedy Thomas layup, a lead they would hold to finish the frame.

The Mustangs responded to start the fourth quarter, moving into a six point lead after Julian Walker made a pair of free throws at the 7:24 mark. The Mustangs would keep the offensive momentum going, pulling into an eleven-point lead with three minutes remaining. Windsor would put a last-ditch effort in to try and pull within striking distance, even cutting the deficit to three with 36 seconds left but the Mustangs were able to hold off the push and finish out the win.

Western was led on the scoreboard by 3rd year forward Julian Walker who put up 21pts, and 16 rebounds on the night. Eriq Jenkins added 15 pts in the win.

Western now moves on to their home opener on Saturday night when the Waterloo Warriors come to Alumni Hall. Tip-off is set for 8:00pm. Western students get free admission when they present their Western ONECard at the box office.
