Mustangs season comes to an end in shootout with McMaster

Hamilton, ON – The Mustangs season came to an end in heart breaking fashion in a 4-3 shootout loss against the McMaster Marauders Wednesday night.

The Marauders put the Mustangs on their heels in the first half of the game. At the 27-minute mark Yordan Stoyanov put McMaster on the board to take a 1-0 lead.

Just as the first half was drawing to a close, the Marauders would extend the lead when Marcus Channer setup Dusan Kovacevic would put one past Mustangs goaltender Kody Thomson to take a 2-0 lead.

The Mustangs coaching staff lit a fire under their side at half as Western came out with an immediate response just three and a half minutes into the 2nd half as Connor Wilson would cut the lead to 2-1, Mohammad Reza Nafar was credited with an assis on the Mustangs goal.

Only 2 minutes later the Mustangs would strike again as Jeremy Arnold would make it 2-2. Western would put a full force effort in the half leading in shots 6-2 but regulation time wasn't enough.

Just under 3 minutes into overtime the Marauders would re-take the lead when Justin Wood would bury a shot to take a 3-2 lead.

The Mustangs wouldn't go away though as Pau Valiente would score in the 118th minute to even the game at 3-3 and we would need penalty kicks to solve this one.

Both sides were able to score on their first two attempts with Robert D'Amario & Luca Trivisonno scoring for Western. After both sides were unable to convert in their third attempts, McMasters Joseph Guindy would score followed by a Christian Devia miss, Matthew Monteiro would put the game away by scoring and finishing the game for McMaster.

The Mustangs led on the shot column on the night, out shooting McMaster 13-8 but it just wasn't enough to extend their season.

McMaster now moves on to take on the York Lions in the OUA Quarterfinal on the weekend.
