ST. CATHERINES, ON – The Mustangs went head-to-head with the Badgers in a Sunday afternoon game on October 27
th. Despite their consistent energy, the Western women fell short in a 1-3 loss against the opposition.
While the Mustangs may not have won, their players still had a number of standout performances. Western's Carly Kimmett produced an impressive .444 hitting percentage against the Badgers. Kristina Curcin led the pack with eight kills throughout the game.
The Badgers opened the game explosively while Western approached the court as if they needed a bit of a warmup. Brock refused to hold anything back and despite their great defensive efforts, the Mustangs folded against the opposing team in a first set defeat of 15-25.
Western returned to the court looking to avenge themselves. The two teams remained neck-and-neck for most of this set; there was tension in the air as audience members watched from the stands of the Bob Davis Gymnasium. With the scoreboard showing 25-24, Western managed the winning point and swiped this set right out from under Brock. The final score rested at 26-24.
With each team holding onto a single set victory, the stakes had risen as the third set began. The Mustangs attempted to communicate among themselves as they defended their court, but attacks coming from the Badgers continued to rain down. With a final score of 17-25, Brock would hold tight to this set.
The fourth set played out very similarly to the third, but the Mustangs refused to grow discouraged. The Badgers were having an impeccable offensive game and Western had taken note of this. The Mustangs combined the majority of their energy into blocking, but it was not quite enough to hold off Brock's efforts. The Badgers snagged the fourth set with 18-25 and accepted an overall victory of 1-3.
The Mustangs will return home after a weekend on the road to face the University of Guelph on Wednesday, October 30
th at 6:00PM. Cheer the women on in person at Alumni Hall or show your support by tuning into the
