Western's Winning Streak Ends in Toronto with 3-6 Loss

Box Score TORONTO, Ont. – The red-hot Mustangs went on the road Saturday, taking on the University of Toronto. Western has won their last three games, and four of their last five. Saturday's matchup was the first between Western and Toronto this season.

Western controlled the pace of the game early, registering the first four shots on goal. The pressure would soon pay off as the Mustangs found the back of the net first. Kolten Olynek. scored the goal on a one-timed shot from the top of the face-off circle.

Toronto would regain momentum over the next several minutes as they caught up on the shot tracker. Western took a penalty that sent the Varsity Blues to the powerplay midway through the second.

The powerplay allowed Toronto to tie the game when a rebound was slammed into the net.

The momentum continued for the Varsity Blues when they scored a go-ahead goal near the end of the first period. A 2-on-1 opportunity allowed Toronto to score into an open net after a cross-crease pass.

The goal would be the final tally of the first period.

Toronto started the second period quickly. The Varsity Blues found the back of the net just two minutes into the second frame to extend the lead.

Soon after the goal, Western gained an extra-man opportunity after Toronto was called for goaltender interference.

Toronto padded their lead once again late in the second period with another goal.

The Mustangs would answer that goal quickly as Ethan Szypula tallied a goal on a wrist shot from a 3-on-2 rush.

The third period proved uneventful during the early goings. About halfway through the period Toronto scored once again. With just 10 minutes to play and a three-goal deficit, the Mustangs appeared to be out of the game.

Toronto scored another goal on the powerplay moments later to put the Varsity Blues up 6-2.

Kenny Huether scored a goal late to bring the Mustangs closer, but the goal would serve as the last of the game.

The loss ended the Mustangs three-game winning streak. Western will play next Friday in Windsor before returning home to London the next night for a home-and-home series against the Windsor Lancers.
