Guelph, ON - The Mustangs faced the Guelph Gryphons as they hoped to build on their first win of the season. Western was victorious after 5 hard fought sets against the Gryphons.
Jackson Bere led the Mustangs in both kills and blocks while Gianfranco Sartor led both teams in digs.
Western took the first point of the match with a kill from Brady Fidler. The Mustangs built on this as they led early in the set 5-2. Kills from Ryan Scott and Jackson Bere helped propel the Mustangs to a 6 point lead with a score or 9-3. A block from Ryan Scott extended the Western lead to 13-5. A big dig from Josiah Esau kept a long rally alive as the Mustangs charged towards a 15-8 lead over the Gryphons. Kills from Gianfranco Sartor, Jackson Bere, and Brady Fidler contributed to a dominant 19-9 lead for Western. Back to back kills from Jackson Bere followed by a kill from Ryan Scott brought the set to 24-12. Guelph began to close the gap to 24-16, but an attacking error led to a 25-16 win for the Mustangs. Western led the match 1-0 heading into the second set.
Back to back kills from Jackson Bere earned Western the first two points of the second set. Guelph tied the set at 2 but a kill from Gianfranco Sartor regained the lead for the Mustangs. From there it became a battle between the teams until Guelph took an 5-8 lead. A kill from Evan Cranshaw gave Western the serve, but Guelph maintained a 7-10 lead. Guelph continued to lead in the set with a score of 13-18. The Gryphons led 14-20 heading into the late part of the set. Brady Fidler and Evan Cranshaw both had kills for Western; however, Guelph still led 17-22. The Gryphons went on to win the set 25-20 tying the match at 1-1.Â
The Gryphons took the first two points of the third set, but a serving error put the ball in Western's hands. Guelph maintained their lead as they made their way towards a 2-6 score. Despite kills from Jackson Bere and Josiah Esau the Gryphons extended their lead to 6-11. Guelph continued to control the set with a score of 8-16. Kills from Jackson Bere and Jason Guy brought the game within 6 points as the score stood at 10-16. A service error by the Gryphons, a block from Ryan Scott, and a big double block from Evan Cranshaw and Ryan Scott shortened Guelph's lead to 15-19. Heading into the final points of the set the Gryphons continued to lead 16-23. Guelph won the set 25-16 and took the lead of the match 2-1.Â
Western took an early 4-1 lead in the fourth set. Kills from Evan Cranshaw and Gianfranco Sartor helped the Mustangs extend their lead to 7-4. Western continued to lead 10-6 thanks to big plays from Nathan Phelps and kills from Gianfranco Sartor and Brady Fidler. An attack off a block earned Evan Cranshaw a kill and helped extend Western's lead to 14-9. Western continued to lead as Jack Cochran began to serve after a kill from Ryan Scott as the Mustangs extended their lead to 18-11. Guelph began to shorten Western's lead as they brought the score to 19-16. A kill from Brady Fidler gave Western the serve as they entered the final points of the set with a score of 20-16. Western continued to lead 23-19 as a Gryphon attack error brought the set to 24-19. Western won the set 25-19 through a kill from Gianfranco Sartor and tied the match at 2.
The Mustangs took the first two points of the final set leading to a 2-1 lead for Western. A kill from Brady Fidler increased Western's lead to 4-1. A massive double block from Gianfranco Sartor and Jackson Bere allowed Western to extend their lead to 6-1. With Western leading 8-2 the two teams switched sides as they entered the last half of the set. Guelph began to answer back, shortening the Mustangs lead to 9-6. A kill from Evan Cranshaw ended Guelph's surge as Western brought the score to 10-6. A well placed attack from Gianfranco Sartor increased the Mustangs' lead to 12-7. A kill from Ryan Scott gave Western the serve as they led 13-8. A big kill from Gianfranco Sartor brought Western to match point with a 14-10 score. An attack error by the Gryphons led to a 15-10 win for the Mustangs.
The Men will play in Waterloo tomorrow at 2:00pm against the Warriors where they hope to extend their current win streak to 3 games.
