MUSTANGS DEFEAT THE WARRIORS IN THREE SETS

Waterloo, ON - The Mustangs faced the Warriors in Waterloo on Sunday afternoon. The Mustangs went into the game with two wins in a row under their belt and quickly added a third as they beat the Warriors in three sets.


Gianfranco Sartor and Evan Cranshaw led both teams in kills with 10 for the match while Brady Fidler and Nathan Phelps led both teams with 7 digs for the day.

The Warriors took an early lead in the match 1-3. A kill from Jackson Bere tied the game at 4. A deep serve from Brady Fidler allowed Western to take their first lead in the set 5-4. While Waterloo began to take a bit of a lead, a kill from Evan Cranshaw tied the game at 7. The Warriors were quick to regain their lead as the score stood at 8-11. A tip from Brady Fidler brought the game back within 1 with a score of 11-12. The Warriors continued to lead 14-16 heading into a technical time out, but a net violation on the first point back brought the game back within 1 point. An attack error from the Warriors tied the game at 16 and a kill from Evan Cranshaw gave Western a 17-16 lead. A service ace from Evan Cranshaw allowed the Mustangs to increase their lead to 19-17. Kills from Gianfranco Sartor and Jackson Bere helped grow the Mustangs lead to 23-20. A kill from Evan Cranshaw brought the set to 24-22 and a kill from Gianfranco Sartor won the set with a final score of 25-22. The Mustangs took an early 1-0 lead in the match.

Jackson Bere attacked off the Waterloo block for a kill to start the second set. A service ace from Brady Fidler gave Western a 4-2 lead. Back to back kills from Evan Cranshaw and Josiah Esau allowed the Mustangs to grow their lead to 6-2. Western continued to gain momentum as the surged towards a 5 point lead with a 11-6 score. As the Mustangs grew their lead to 6 points they forced the Waterloo Warriors to take a timeout. The timeout did nothing to change Western's control of the set as they grew their lead to 14-6. The Warriors began to close the gap, but a service error gave Western the serve with a score of 15-11. A kill from Jackson Bere followed by a big double block from Josiah Esau and Jackson Bere allowed Western to grow the Mustangs lead to 20-12. The Mustangs had a comfortable 11 point lead heading into the final points of the set with a score of 23-12. A kill from Jackson Bere brought the set to the final point and a kill from Brady Fidler won the set 25-13. Western took a 2-0 lead in the match.

The third set had an early 2-2 tie with both teams battling to gain a lead. Western was the first to gain a larger lead of 6-3 after a double block from Jackson Bere and Josiah Esau. Waterloo fought back and tied the game at 7. The Warriors took a momentary 7-8 lead, but a kill from Evan Cranshaw was quick to tie it at 8. Waterloo managed to block back to back attacks from Gianfranco Sartor to gain a 9-11 lead. A service error from the Warriors brought the game back within one point and an attack error tied the game at 12. The Warriors began to regain their lead, but a kill from Evan Cranshaw brought the score to 13-14. Waterloo remained in control of the set as a kill from Jackson Bere brought the score to 16-17. A kill from Gianfranco Sartor tied the set at 19 as the teams headed into a time out. A block from Gianfranco Sartor and Ryan Scott allowed the Mustangs to gain a 20-19 lead. The late part of the set became a battle as the teams tied at 21 and then again at 22. After kills from Jackson Bere and Evan Cranshaw the score stood at 24-22 for the Mustangs. Another kill from Evan Cranshaw won the set for the Mustangs 25-23. Western won the match in three straight sets.

The Mustangs return home on Friday, November 22nd where they will face York University at 8:00pm. Wear your purple when you come out to cheer on the men as they attempt to extend their win streak to four games.
