Mustangs Win 3-2 Thriller in Waterloo

WATERLOO, Ont. – The Mustangs headed on the road to take on the Waterloo Warriors. The matchup served as the two teams' first matchup of the regular season. Western and Waterloo faced off in the preseason with the Warriors taking home a 7-3 victory.

Ethan Szypula opened the scoring at 11:17 for his fourth goal of the season. Kolton Olynek picked up the lone assist on the play.

The lead did not last long as the Warriors answered with two goals of their own near the end of the first period. Andrew Cordssen-Davis scored the first goal at 15:21 while Jack Scanian added the second at 18:16. The first period ended with the Waterloo Warriors leading 2-1.

Both teams registered 12 shots on goal in the first period and both teams successfully killed off two penalties.

Momentum shifted in the second period as Western started to control play. Kenny Heuther scored the game-tying goal at 9:42 of the second period. Though they could not find the back of the net again, the Mustangs dominated in shots on goal. The second period ended in a tie game with Western outshooting Waterloo 12-5 for a total advantage of 24-17.

The momentum continued into the third as Western continued peppering the Waterloo net with shots. The Mustangs registered 16 shots on goal in the third period, good for a total of 40. The first and only goal of the third period came at 15:55 of the final frame. Kolton Olynek scored his second goal of the year while Ethan Szypula and Sean Montgomery added the assists. The goal would stand as the game-winning goal for Western.

The Mustangs will head on the road once again as they take on Guelph University next Thursday.
