Box Score LONDON, Ont. – The Mustangs played their first second game of the weekend Saturday afternoon on the second leg of a home-and-home series against the Windsor Lancers. The Lancers defeated Western in Windsor during the first game on Friday.

The Mustangs and the Lancers traded powerplay opportunities with neither team being able to score early in the first period. A powerplay midway through the first would produce the first goal of the game, however.

With a Mustang in the penalty box, Windsor scored the first goal of the game on a shot from low in the zone. The goal came from Kody Gagnon at 13:56 of the first period.
Penalties continued at a torrid pace the rest of the period as each team earned more powerplay opportunities. The first Lancer goal would stand as the only marker scored in the period as the Mustangs went into first intermission with a one-goal deficit.

The second period started with the Mustangs pushing hard for a goal. The goaltenders, however, continued to be the stars of the game as each goalie made multiple impressive saves in the early goings of the second period.

Another extra-man opportunity produced the second goal of the game for Windsor. The Lancers scored at 10:59 of the second on a shot from the face-off circle that panged off the bar and in over Luke Peresinni's shoulder.

Windsor added another powerplay goal at 15:04 of the second period to push their lead to 3 goals.

Under a minute later, at 16:01 of the second frame, the Mustangs finally found the score sheet as Ethan Szypula scored on a hard shot from the point that snuck its way into the back of the net. The goal was Szypula's eighth of the season. The forward has gotten off to a fast start this year, nearly surpassing his goal total from all of last year in the first half of this campaign. Szypula spoke after the game about what has lead to this breakout season.

"I think the confidence is different. Just feeling comfortable finding your place, figuring out how to play on this level. I feel like I had more to give last year, and our line has a lot of chemistry so it's been going in."

Western pulled within one goal when Franco Sproviero scored yet another powerplay goal. The second period was a high-flying affair as each team tallied two goals. The Mustangs registered 22 shots on goal while Windsor had 15.

Head Coach Clarke Singer spoke after the game about the powerplay unit's early season success.

"We scored a couple goals on the powerplay. It was a really good effort. We added a couple pieces to the unit, we're shooting the puck more and getting traffic down low. It's working."

The Windsor net was under siege early in the third period as Western pumped shots into the Lancer goalie. Though there were many high-quality chances, none counted.

The first goal of the third period finally found the back of the net when Windsor pushed their lead back to two goals on a short-handed breakaway. The Lancers iced the game with an empty net goal late in the game.

Western would lose the game 5-2. The Mustangs return to Thompson Arena to take on University of Guelph Friday, November 29th.
