MUSTANGS FALL IN FOUR SETS TO END WIN STREAK

London, ON - The Mustangs faced the Nipissing Lakers at home on Saturday night in their last game before the break. The Mustangs fell 3-1 to end their win streak.

Jackson Bere led the Mustangs with 13 kills while Brady Fidler led the team in service aces and Nathan Phelps led in digs.

After splitting the first two points of the match, the Mustangs took a 2-1 lead after a kill from Brady Fidler. The Mustangs began to build on their momentum as they grew their lead to 7-3 heading into a Lakers timeout. The timeout did nothing to slow Western as they continued to grow their lead to 9-3. The Lakers earned a point, but a kill from Jackson Bere regained the serve for Western. Nipissing began to answer back as they shortened Western's lead to 11-7. A powerful service ace from Evan Cranshaw brought the set to 14-8 for the Mustangs. A kill from Brady Fidler from a ball over the net regained control for the Mustangs with a 15-9 score. The Lakers started to shorten Western's lead to 17-14, but a kill from Jackson Bere put the ball in Brady Fidler's hands for the serve. Western led by 6 points heading into a Lakers timeout late in the set with a score of 20-14. Evan Cranshaw's big block helped the Mustangs charge ahead to a 22-14 lead. A service ace from Brady Fidler brought the score to 23-14. Another kill from Jackson Bere brought the set to 24-15 and the Mustangs went on to win the set 25-15. Western led the match 1-0 heading into the second set. 

The Mustangs took the first point of the second set and a big block from Gianfranco Sartor helped Western grow their lead to 4-1. The Lakers shortened the Mustangs lead to 4-3, but a kill from Gianfranco Sartor allowed the Mustangs to maintain a 5-3 lead. However, the Lakers were quick to answer and tied the set at 5. The Lakers took their first lead of the set and sped ahead to a 6-10 score before Western called a timeout. A serving error from the Lakers gave Western back the serve with a score of 7-12. Western regained the serve trailing the Lakers 8-14, but the Lakers were quick to regain control. A kill from Brady Fidler off the block gave Evan Cranshaw the serve with the scoreboard showing 9-16. The Mustangs began to shorten the Lakers lead to 13-17 forcing the Lakers to take a timeout. A massive kill from Gianfranco Sartor put the ball in Western's hands and Rhys Matheson was subbed in to serve. The Mustangs were able to shorten the Laker's lead to 15-19. A powerful kill from Evan Cranshaw brought the score to 17-21 late in the set. The Lakers went on to win the second set 19-25 tying the match at 1. 

A big kill from Jackson Bere tied the third set at 1, but the Lakers were quick to take a 1-3 lead. Despite another kill from Jackson Bere, the Lakers continued to lead 3-5. A kill off the block from Evan Cranshaw brought the set to 4-5, but the Lakers were able to regain control and grow their lead to 5-9. A big kill off the block from Brady Fidler gave Western the serve as they brought the score to 7-9. After being subbed in Blake Fenwick made a big defensive play, but the Lakers continued to lead 7-13 heading into a Mustangs time out. Both Amit Sayal and Jack Cochran were subbed into the game following the time out. The Lakers continued to lead 7-16 heading into another timeout. The Lakers led 8-20 heading into the late part of the set before a kill from Jackson Bere gave Brady Fidler the serve. A big double block from Ryan Scott and Gianfranco Sartor brought the set to 12-23. The Lakers went on to win the set 13-25 and took a 2-1 lead in the match. 

A double block from Ryan Scott and Brady Fidler gave Western the first point of the set, but it was soon tied at 1. The Lakers took a 3-2 lead; however, kills from Evan Cranshaw, Gianfranco Sartor, and Josiah Esau gave Western a 5-3 lead. The set became a battle as it was tied at 5 and then again at 6. A kill from Jackson Bere gave Western a 7-6 lead. The Lakers took a 7-8 lead after a service ace, but a kill from Ryan Scott tied the set at 8. A kill from Gianfranco Sartor tied the set at 9 and another kill from Jackson Bere tied the set at 11. A big kill from Evan Cranshaw tied the set at 13, but the Lakers were able to gain a 13-16 lead heading into a timeout. Western earned a point from a kill from Evan Cranshaw; however, the Lakers still lead 14-18 heading into another timeout. Western struggled to stop the Lakers momentum as they led 14-21. A kill from Brady Fidler brought the score to 16-22 and gave Ryan Scott the serve. A big block from Jackson Bere brought the set back within 5 points with a score of 17-22. With the set at match point a kill from Jackson Bere brought the score to 19-24. It wasn't enough to stop the Lakers as they went on to win the set 20-25 taking the match 3-1.  

The men will play in the new year against the Ryerson Rams at 8:00pm in Toronto.
