Mustangs beat out Lancers 3-2

11/23/2019 7:09:00 PM

Box Score The Western women's ice hockey team will take the first of two regular season games against the Windsor Lancers, beating them by a score of 3-2.

In an exciting battle that was evenly matched between the two teams, both goaltenders were spectacular in net, as Western netminder Carmen Lasis made 42 saves on 44 shots and Windsor goalie Jaydlin Spooner made 33 saves on 36 shots.

In the first frame, Western rookie defender Emma Thomas opened up the scoring with her first career OUA goal, firing one off from the point past a screen in front to put the Mustangs up by one.

The Mustangs were then awarded a power play, and though it was not successful, they maintained good offensive zone pressure throughout.

At around the 13-minute mark, the Windsor Lancers would immediately turn around the momentum of the game and get on the board as Kendi Lundell took a high shot on a rush into the Mustangs' zone, tying up the score.

The Mustangs would enter the first intermission tied, hungry for a win against the second-last place team in the OUA who had won their last two games.

In the second period, Mustangs' Sarah Irwin was penalized for slashing, resulting in a two-minute minor that the team was able to kill off. A few good clears off of the faceoff would help Western with their penalty kill, which stayed perfect throughout the game, and now sits at 89.7% for third in the league.

However, it wasn't just defence that made their penalty kill so successful. Just 30 seconds into it, Mustangs co-captain April Clark was ferocious on the forecheck, and managed to strip the puck off of a defender for a shorthanded goal to put the Mustangs up by one.

The Mustangs entered the final intermission up by one, determined to keep the lead.

In the final frame, after some sustained pressure by the Lancers in the Mustangs' zone, Lundell scored her second goal of the game to tie it up again, slotting it past the left pad of Lasis.

Windsor defender Victoria Sudeyko was then whistled for tripping, landing her in the box while the Western power play unit got to work. It took only six seconds for Mustangs forward Sydnee Baker to score her sixth goal of the season to restore the Mustangs' lead, and the Western team would maintain that score for the rest of the game.

The Western Mustangs will play their last game of this calendar year on the road in St. Catharine's against Brock University on Thursday, November 28th at 7:15PM. The game can be streamed at oua.tv.
