Mustangs dominate Laurier 74-46 in final home game of 2019

London, ON – The Mustangs dominated Laurier and picked up a 74-46 on Wednesday night in their second meeting of the week with the Golden Hawks.

Julia Curran led the offence with 15 points, she was one of five Mustangs in double digits in the points column on the night.

"We had three things we wanted to accomplish coming out of the last game against them and everyone really responded." said Mustangs Head Coach Nathan McKibbon "We made rebounding a huge focus tonight and they only had six offensive rebounds tonight, we talked a lot about passing and being good passers and we only had 9 turnovers so I'm really happy with the showing tonight.

A back and forth first quarter saw the Mustangs take an 18-14 lead. Elizabeth Leblanc led the Mustangs offence with eight points and two rebounds.

"I feel like I started a little slow tonight, but everyone is so talented on our team so if someone is off then someone else will pick it up." said Leblanc "I was feeling it a little better in the second and was happy to contribute".

Western kept the offensive pressure going in the 2nd quarter, opening up an eight-point lead at one point on an Emma Johnson jumper with just over four minutes to go in the half. The Mustangs lead would be extended even further when Johnson would hit a three pointer with 53 seconds left in the second quarter and Western would take a 37-23 lead into half time.

"Early in my coaching career I thought a lot about what system we were running and now with the talent we have it's more about who we are running it for." said McKibbon of early points leaders in the game "We are trying to get the best players in situations to handle the ball and make decisions early in the game and then once the opposition takes them away it opens things up for other players on the floor."

Western came out of the half with a head of steam and continued to dominate the floor. Laurier wasn't able to get their first points of the third until just over three minutes into the frame, Western had already opened up a 14-point lead. Western would spread out their scoring with six of their eight players getting points in the third quarter. The Mustangs worked their lead as high as 24 to finish out the quarter up 57-33.

The fourth quarter was a little more even but Western won the frame 17-13 and expanded their lead to as much as 30 during the 4th quarter.

The Mustangs finish out the 2019 portion of their schedule Saturday night on the road against the Guelph Gryphons.

McKibbon admits a focus of the preparation for the game is making sure his players are focussing on the game and not the break which will follow.

"I've tried not to pay too much attention to Guelph yet as I really wanted our teams full focus to be on these two games against Laurier. We will enjoy this tonight and then start breaking down the film tomorrow, Guelph is a very good ball team and they will give us a good fight."

Tip-off is set for 1:00pm. Fans can watch the action on OUA.tv.
