London, ON – The Mustangs gave up three goals in the third period on route to a 4-2 loss to the Guelph Gryphons on Friday night.
"I thought we had a good first two periods but the way we played the third just isn't acceptable," said Mustangs Head Coach Clarke Singer "We had a couple opportunities to put the game away on power plays (in the third) but we weren't very good one either one and that allowed Guelph to take the game over".
The Mustangs opened the scoring in this one when Stephen Desrocher picked up a powerplay goal at the 6:24 mark of the 1
st period but says the Mustangs inability to pull out the win is causing frustration.
"Everyone is frustrated from the coaches through the players and even the fans in the stand have to be frustrated," said Desrocher "We know we can play so much better and we have such a good group of guys in this dressing room and this shouldn't be happening to us".
After the Gryphons tied the game early in the 2
nd period, Mustangs forward Kolten Olynek regained the lead.
"We kind of knew they were going to reverse the puck so I kind of stayed high there, he (Theo Lewis) shot the puck on net and I was there to put a bit of a dirty one in there," said Olynek "You need to score those goals and get to the net but we are just going to look forward to tomorrow and hopefully a better result."
The Gryphons took a penalty with one second left in the 2
nd period so the Mustangs had a man advantage to start the 3
rd period but weren't able to convert, Guelph would immediately respond when Matt Kenney scored at the 6:37 mark. Western would again take a man advantage at the 4:28 mark but against weren't able to convert and nine seconds later Guelph's Jesse Saban would score the eventual game winner.
"We've got to play better as a team, as individuals, as coaches and we just need a little bit more from everyone and it's been going on for the last four games" said Singer "The league is so close right now that you have to play complete games and play as good as you can to win."
Luke Peresinni made 36 saves on the night for the Mustangs.
"We've been trying to get something going and we know we have one more game to go before the break and we need to come out with a good effort tomorrow night and try to end 2019 on a high note." said Desrocher
The Mustangs travel to Toronto tomorrow night to take on the Ryerson Rams. Puck drop is set for 7:15pm. Fans can watch the action on OUA.tv
