Western took home a Victory over Guelph Thursday night

Mustangs Pick Up 5-4 Victory in Guelph

Box Score GUELPH, Ont. – The Mustangs travelled to Guelph for a rare Thursday night match up against the Guelph Gryphons. The contest marked the first between the two teams of the 2019-20 season.

There would be no "feeling out process" in this game as both teams came out blazing. The Gryphons scored the first goal of the night just 20 seconds into the game. Ted Nichol scored the goal with an assist from Justin Lemcke.

The Mustangs weren't down for long as they responded with a goal of their own at 1:07 of the first period. The marker came from Reed Morison, his first goal of the season. Ethan Szypula got the lone helper on the play.

With the game now tied, Western looked to take their first lead of the game. It didn't take long. At 4:23 in the first, Kenny Heuther found the back of the net to put the Mustangs into the lead. Franco Sproviero assisted on the play as both players continued their strong offensive campaigns.

Western built on their lead a few minutes later when Kyle Langdon scored his third goal of the season, putting the Mustangs up 3-1. Theo Lewis and Alex Di Carlo registered assists.

The frantic first period ended with Western putting 12 shots on goal, while Guelph got 13.

Guelph struck early in the period once again to kick off the second frame. Mikkel Aagaard scored his 10th goal of the season 45 seconds into the period to bring the Gryphons back within one. Guelph tied the game on another goal five minutes later.

The Mustangs flipped the script in the third period as they scored the first goal to regain the lead. Sean Montgomery banged the goal home on the powerplay with another assist going to Franco Sproviero.

The Gryphons would answer midway through the period to tie the game back up.

As the clock ticked down, the game appeared as if it would go to overtime, but the Mustangs made a late bid to end the game in regulation. Ethan Szypula scored on the powerplay for his fifth goal of the season.

The goal stood as the game-winning tally, giving the Mustangs a win in an exciting affair. The win pushes Western to 4-5 on the year including victories in three of their last four games. The Mustangs will travel to Waterloo to take on Wilfred Laurier University on Saturday, November 9th.
