Waterloo, ON – Western spread out the offense in game 2 of their first round series with Laurier to pick up a 3-2 win and sweep the series.
The Mustangs got an early chance on the man advantage and peppered several shots at the Golden Hawks goal but some good defensive pressure kept the puck out of the Laurier net.
Western would get the opening goal of the game at 11:56 of the 1
st period.
Rylan Bechtel picked up a clearing attempt by Laurier goaltender Olivier Lafrienere, He stopped the puck at the blue line and let a slap shot go and it snuck by Lafrienere to take a 1-0 advantage.
In the 2
nd period
Ethan Szypula made a dazzling move to extend the Mustangs lead. Szypula picked up the puck in neutral ice and walked into the offensive zone with his head up, he toe dragged around the defense and fired the puck through the five hole of Lafreniere to make it 2-0. Adam Sinclair was credited with the lone assist on the goal.
The Mustang would keep up the offensive pressure nearing the end of the 2
nd period. After poking the puck away from Laurier at their own blue line Western's
Mitchell Brooks skated the puck through the neutral zone and into the offensive zone, he passed it across to
Kolten Olynek who wristed it into the Laurier net to extend the Western lead to 3-0.
The Golden Hawks weren't going to go away quietly though as they would net a pair of goals in a thirty second stretch in the final minute of the period. Will Cook would get the first and then Ethan Wiseman would add a goal of his own. After 2 periods it was 3-2 in the Mustangs favour.
Late in the 3
rd period the Mustangs Rylan Bechtel was called for cross checking, giving the Golden Hawks a golden opportunity to tie the game up but Western's penalty kill did a great job to keep the puck out of their net and secure the win on the night and the series.
Luke Peressini made 37 saves on the night facing 39 shots. Olivier Lafreniere stopped 35 Western shots.
Western will now wait to find out who they play in the next round of the playoffs.
