Windsor, ON – The Mustangs dropped a 3-1 loss to the Windsor Lancers to close out the regular season on Saturday afternoon.
Western opened the scoring on the game just 1:59 into the 1
st period when
Rachel Armstrong picked up her 7
th goal of the season on the powerplay. After an
Evra Levesque shot from the blue line was tapped by
April Clarke, Armstrong made a nice move to deflect the shot into the Windsor net to make it 1-0.
The Lancers would respond in the 2
nd period, Alix Reiter made a solo effort from the neutral zone and into the offensive zone. She walked in and shot a quick wrist shot that beat Camren Lasis to tie the game up at 1-1 at the 4:35 mark of the period.
Later on, with the Mustangs in the penalty box Emma Welburn would make them pay. After a shot from the blue line hit traffic in front of the net it was picked up by the lancers and shoveled towards the net, Lasis tried to squeeze the puck but it squeeked through her gear and into the net and the Lancers took a 2-1 lead.
In the 3
rd period both teams exchanged chances and with 50 seconds remaining the Mustangs pulled their goalie in an attempt to get the tieing goal. Western had several good chances but the Lancers were able to get the puck out of their zone and into neutral ice, Taylor Conte would try to hit the open net but it was blocked initially by Evra Levesque but gathered by Jessica Gribbon who finished the empty netter.
Western's
Carmen Lasis made 21 saves on the game while Windsor's Jaydlin Spooner stopped 34 Mustang's shots.
Western finishes the regular season with a 14-5-1-4 record, good for 2
nd in the standings and will have home ice advantage in the playoffs.
