London, ON – With the playoffs on the horizon the Mustangs dug deep with games against Waterloo & Guelph to finish out the regular season schedule.
The Mustangs got things going on Friday night against 1
st placed Waterloo who were 16-1 coming into the night.
Western was able to take the early lead in the 1
st set. The Mustangs went on an early run and were up 13-3 quickly and kept the top ranked team on their heels throughout the first set and eventually finished them off 25-12.
The Warriors re-grouped in between sets and came out strong in the second. Both teams traded points early on, but the Warriors went on a six-point run in the middle of the set and ended up winning 25-16 to tie the game up.
Both teams were tight through sets three and four as well with Waterloo taking set three 26-24 and Western winning the forth 25-23.
This game came down to the fifth set. The Mustangs took advantage of a pair of point bursts with four points early and then a six-point stretch going from up 6-2 to 11-2. The Mustangs were able to finish off the Warriors 15-6 and take the game 3-2.
Kelsey Veltman was responsible for 28.5 points on the night including 21 kills.
On Saturday night Western welcomed Guelph for Senior Night. Western recognized three graduating players in
Courtney Sestric, Kelsey Veltman &
Leah Mousseau.
After the pre-game ceremony both teams went to work and traded points evenly throughout the 1
st set. The Mustangs had a pair of four-point bursts and then things evened up at 19 each late in the set. Western was able to pull through at the end with a 25-23 final.
Into the second set Western came out strong and went from 4-2 to 12-6 in a quick fashion. The Mustangs would finish off the set 25-18.
After Western was able to go up 8-4 through the start of the third set, the Gryphons were able to answer with seven points of their own to take the 11-8 lead. Both teams would battle back and forth and get to 18-18. This tight action would continue through the rest of the third set and would require extra serves. Western would get the better of the Gryphons on the final though as the third would finish 29-27.
Kelsey Veltman led the Mustangs with 13 points and 12 kills.
Western will host Queen's on Saturday at 2:30pm at Alumni Hall in the OUA Quarterfinal.
