Mustangs shut out Golden Hawks

WATERLOO, Ont. – Mustang goaltender Carmen Lasis secured a 2-0 shut out against the Laurier Golden Hawks Friday night at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex.

Western's goals were provided by April Clark in the second period, and Shailyn Waites in the third.

In their last match-up in November, Western emerged triumphant with a 3-1 win over the Golden Hawks. Laurier was unable to snag a victory tonight as well.

The Mustangs had two power play opportunities in the first frame, but they did not capitalize on the player advantage. Although Western outshot Laurier 11-4, they could not beat Cohen Myers in net.

With 10 seconds left in the first, the Golden Hawks received another penalty, giving the Mustangs almost a full two-minute power play at the beginning of the second period.

Five minutes in, Clark netted a power play goal and her 20thof the season, further cementing her lead for most goals scored in the OUA. She was assisted by Renae Nevills and Evra Levesque. The Mustangs are eighth in the league for power play goals, with tonight's marking their 11thof the season.

Western ended the second frame with a 1-0 lead, outshooting Laurier 14-11.

Waites scored the Mustangs' insurance marker 11 minutes into the final period. Fed by Rachel Armstrong and Nevills, Waites made it past Myers to extend Western's lead to 2-0 and tally her fourth goal.

The final frame saw more penalties than the first two combined, but neither team netted a power play goal on any of the seven chances.

Laurier outshot western 12-9 in third to try and make a comeback, but Lasis secured another shut out with the 2-0 win.

Western sits in second place with a record of 13-4-1-4 and 45 points. They have clinched a playoff spot with their ranking. Laurier remains second to last, standing at 4-17-0-1 with 13 points.

The Mustangs return to London Sunday at 2:30pm for their last regular season match-up on home ice versus the Waterloo Warriors. Fans can catch the action live at OUA.tv
