LONDON, Ont.- The Mustangs' men's rugby team won 50-7 against UFT Saturday evening in their first home game of the season. The win will bring Western to a 1-2 record in the OUA regular season and drop the Varsity Blue's to 0-3.
Â
The game was off to a quick start with a try by scrumhalf Samuel Kahn. Not long after a second was scored by open-side flanker Chase Harrison with both converts successful by Mikko Vorster, bringing the Mustangs to a 14-0 lead. With the former 'Stangs rugby alumni cheering in the stands, the Purple and White continued to climb the scoreboard with tries from McMartin, Pitblado, Scott, Marques, and Kryczka.
When asked what he think the team did right out on the pitch, Chase Harrison answered, "I think we were using our system really well. We're trying to work the ball to the far side and back and we were able to exploit the wide-side channels of the field. I think both the forwards and backs put on a good show tonight."Â
Â
While the Mustangs faced some difficulty in the face of scrums, their lineouts verged on a one-hundred percent success rate regardless of possession. Lock Daniel Mitchell managed to steal the ball out of the Blue's possession on several accounts, followed by quick offloads to Khan that resulted in runs down the Mustang's line. Â
In spite of the strong win, Head Coach Tom Dolezel remained focused on what needs to be cleaned up if the Purple and White are to continue to move forward in the season. "We gave away a lot of penalties," he said, "and that's a negative. But on the positive side, the boys really pieced it together today." In terms of what they will be working on in preparation for their next game, Dolozel stated that, "We're [going to work on] minimizing errors...and take advantage when we can. We left a lot of points on the field that we could have put on the board. It comes down to simple executions and errors, but we'll fix it."
The Mustangs will be returning to the pitch on Sunday, September 21
st against the Laurier Goldenhawks. The game is scheduled to take place here at Western on Alumni Field at 2:00 P.M EST.Â
