Explosive second half leads to Mustangs 58-25 win over Windsor

Windsor, ON - A trio of third-quarter touchdowns led the Mustangs to a 58-25 win over Windsor on Saturday afternoon.

Coming into the day a lot of attention was on what the new look Lancers would bring under the leadership of Head Coach J.P. Circelli who had spent the last 4 years with the Mustangs coaching staff.

Western would open the scoring in a big way in this one, Chris Merchant threw the ball over the middle and connected with Savaughn Magnaye-Jones for an 82 yard TD to take the 7-0 lead.

Windsor would respond quickly on the next drive with a TD of their own to tie the game at 7-7.

After pulling ahead 10-7 on a field goal, Windsor would take their first lead of the game on a Sam Girard 1 yard TD run.

Before the end of the half, with Windsor up 17-16, the Mustangs would regain the lead. Merchant connected with Brett Ellerman for a 5 yard TD to take a 23-17 win into half time.

Western came out with a major offensive push to start the second half.

Trey Humes stared the scoring early with a 12 yard TD run at 11:44 to take the 30-17 lead and then minutes later Brett Ellerman would get the 42-yard catch at 9:52 and the Mustangs moved the scoreboard to 37-17.

The powerful Mustangs offence kept their foot on the pedal when MalikBesseghieur would pick up a TD on a 45-yard reception making it 44-17 Western with just under 10 minutes left in the 3rd.

Windsor would get a late touchdown and a two-point conversion to pull the score to 44-24 but it was too late for the Lancers.

With time expiring in the game Jonathan Femi-Cole would take the ball and power it into the end zone to push the Mustangs lead to 51-25.

With the game out of reach, the Lancers would air the ball out and it was picked off by Alex Salytchev who took it back for pick-6 and a 58-25 lead.

   

With the win, he Mustangs keep their undefeated record intact moving to 6-0 on the season. Windsor drops to 1-5 with the loss.

The Mustangs return to TD Stadium for the remainder of the regular season. First up is the Waterloo Warriors next Saturday (October 5th) at 1:00 pm.
