Western falls 7-3 to Laurier

Waterloo, ON – The Mustangs dropped a 7-3 loss to the Laurier Golden Hawks on Friday night.

Western got the scoring started early on as Stephen Desrocher sprung Franco Sproviero on a break who entered the offensive zone and threw the puck to the front of the net, it hit a leg in front and banked past the Golden Hawks goaltender to open the scoring just 53 seconds into the game.

Laurier would even the game on the powerplay at the 2:07 mark of the 2nd period. They would add another goal at 8:05 to take their first lead of the night.

Western would respond when Kenny Huether picked up the puck behind the Laurier net and fed it into the slot where Kolten Olynek was on the doorstep and put the one-timer home to tie the game at 2-2 midway through the 2nd.

A pair of Laurier goals within 1:10 of each other helped the Golden Hawks to a 4-2 lead through 40 minutes.

The 3rd period didn't start well for the Mustangs as Laurier would again score a pair of goals quickly. Anthony Sorrentino scored at 1:25 and Steven MacLean converted at 2:59 to take a 6-2 lead.

After Laurier took a 7-2 lead and chased Mustangs starter Luke Peressini from the game, Western's Theo Lewis tipped the puck past Golden Hawks goaltender Matt Williams with three and half minutes remaining in regulation to cut the Laurier lead to four.

Western was outshot 34-21 on the night and sit tied for 8th in the West conference in the OUA at 17 points with Waterloo.
