ST. CATHERINE'S, Ont. – The women's basketball team defeated the Brock Badgers 67-59 in a tight match on Wednesday evening. Recovering from their loss to the Ryerson Rams the previous Saturday, the Mustangs' record will rise to 13-2 while the Badgers fall to 10-3.
The Mustangs and Badgers held a 33-33 tie nearing the end of the second quarter. With similar season records, the game was shaping up to be as competitive as promised. The half would close with the Mustangs leading by 3 points and guard Maddy Horst in the lead for points on the board. With 9 of her total 15 taking place in the second quarter, Horst proved to be much of the reason that the 'Stangs managed to pull ahead. Behind Horst with 8 points was Julia Curran, and having yet to break double digits, the Badgers' lead scorer Jenneke Pilling sat on the cusp with 9 points while teammate Sam Keltos hovered behind with 7.
Rachel Fradgley wasted no time at the start of the third and picked off a quick 2 assisted by Horst. Melissa Tatti retaliated with an effortless layup, but the Badgers would need more from their top player if they wanted to overcome the Purple and White. With another 3 she brought her team within 1 point of the Mustangs to keep the Badgers in the fight. Tied 46-all, the Mustangs retained control of the court with a better defensive game than that of their opponent.
Waltzing into the fourth 48-46, the Mustangs would need to up their energy if they were going to keep the game in their favour. A stressful back-and-forth ensued, each team overcoming the other by one point at a time. Fradgley pushed the Purple and White to a 6-point lead with an easy basket made doable from smooth offensive moves. With less than two minutes remaining, Horst shut down an attempt by Tatti once again, enabling an additional 2 points for the Badgers and offering a renewed burst of energy. With two final free throws, Rachel Fradgley brought the Mustangs to their winning score of 67 while the Badgers failed to break 60.
The Mustangs will return to the court this Saturday, January 18
th, in Hamilton, Ontario. They'll face off against the McMaster Marauders at 12:00 P.M EST.
