Mustangs Earn Weekend Sweep with 4-2 Victory

1/18/2020 9:33:00 PM

Box Score Thunder Bay, Ont. – The Western Mustangs matched up with the Lakehead Thunderwolves Saturday night in the second half of a weekend set. The Mustangs emerged victorious in game 1 after a furious comeback. Luke Peressini started for Western in net.

The Mustangs controlled the early parts of the game, outshooting the Thunderwolves 8-2 in the first five minutes of the game. The early onslaught did not result in a goal at first, but the Mustangs would finally break the seal moments later.

Franco Sproviero sniped the puck past the Lakehead goaltender after the Mustangs were the beneficiary of a Thunderwolves turnover. The puck found its way to Sproviero who made no mistakes in tallying his 11th goal of the season.

The Mustangs continued to pepper the Lakehead net, but a scrum out in front resulted in a Western penalty. Ethan Syzpula went to the box as a result of a high-sticking call. Another Mustang went to the box about 45 seconds into the initial powerplay opportunity. This gave the Thunderwolves an extended 5-on-3 chance.

The 5-on-3 would not last for long as a Lakehead player was also sent off for a high-sticking penalty. The infraction resulted in blood, making it a four-minute penalty. No goals resulted from the ensuing powerplays.

The first period ended with the Mustangs holding on to the one-goal lead.

The Mustangs would add to their lead early in the period when Kolten Olynek scored an easy tap-in goal for his second of the weekend.

The Thunderwolves found their way on the score sheet midway into the second period when Peressini made a save on a shot, only to have the puck trickle into the net behind him. Lakehead had been gaining momentum before the goal.

This momentum would continue as the Thunderwolves began sustaining consistent offensive pressure. The momentum would not result in a goal, however, as the Mustangs would soon push their lead back to two goals.

The goal came from a shot from the point that the Lakehead goaltender couldn't track. The goal was scored by David Eccles and served as the first goal of Eccles U sports career.

The second period would see no more scoring from there, as Western carried a two-goal lead into the third period.

The third and final period of the game did not see much action, other than the Mustangs and Thunderwolves trading fruitless powerplay chances. Just as it seemed Western had wrapped up the game, Lakehead University clawed their way back in.

The Thunderwolves pulled their goalie and would score with the extra man. This gave Lakehead the chance to get back in the game, but their newly found hope wouldn't last long. Western scored an empty net goal moments later to ice the game and a 4-2 victory.

The Mustangs skated away from Thunder Bay with a weekend sweep, and will face University of Toronto in their next matchup on Wednesday.
