Box Score Toronto, ON– The Mustangs traveled to Toronto for a rare Wednesday-night matchup. Western took on the University of Toronto after sweeping Lakehead University the series prior.

University of Toronto scored the first goal of the game on a below-the-goal-line passing play that finally found a Toronto forward alone in front. The Varsity Blues made no mistake and put the puck past Luke Peresinni.

The goal would serve as the only marker of the first period, despite a late flurry by the University of Toronto. Though Western went into the break with a deficit, the Mustangs played better in the second half of the period than the first.

The Varsity Blues extended their lead early in the second. University of Toronto has the most prolific offence in the league, and it showed early in the game. Western, however, was not backing down. The Mustang offence got their share of opportunities but couldn't capitalize.

The Mustangs had an opportunity on the powerplay late in the period, which yielded lots of scoring chances, but once again, Western couldn't find the back of the net. The Mustangs went into the third period needing a big-time performance to get back in the game.

It appeared they wouldn't get that performance at first, but they would finally break the ice about halfway through the third frame. Kenny Heuther scored the first goal of the game for the Mustangs, allowing Western to claw back into the game.

The comeback bid seemed like it would fall short, with the clock all but run out on the Mustang. But a late powerplay opportunity provided one last hope. A hope that would be answered as the Mustangs put the puck past a sprawling Toronto goaltender with just eight seconds remaining.

Western could carry that momentum into overtime as Franco Sproviero sealed the win just 23 seconds into extra time.
