Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Karina Leung

Mustangs blanked by the Varsity Blues

The Western Mustang's women's hockey team suffered a frustrating third loss in a row on Friday night against the Toronto Varsity Blues in Toronto, getting shutout by a score of 3 – 0.

The first period started off promising for the Mustangs, as they matched the offensive pressure of the first-place team in the OUA. The period was scoreless, though, as both Western netminder Carmen Lasis and Varsity Blues netminder Madeline Albert were strong in goal.

In the second frame, the Mustangs started off on a power-play but were unable to convert. In response, the Varsity Blues took complete control of the game and scored three unanswered goals in just over ten minutes, two of them coming on the player-advantage. The Mustangs weren't lacking in opportunities to score, however, as they did have two power-plays of their own, but the offence was unable to get anything past Albert.

The final period saw the Mustangs go on the player-advantage three times, but nothing was able to convert to give the Mustangs any sort of momentum to tie the game. The league's first-place power play with a percentage of 20.3 couldn't get anything past the Varsity Blues penalty kill and Madeline Albert, and Toronto would go on to win the game in their home arena.

It's the final stretch for the Mustangs now, as they only have five regular season games left. They currently sit in 8th place in the standings in the last playoff spot, just one point ahead of Queen's. They'll have to turn things around quickly to make sure that last spot is theirs.

Catch the Mustangs tomorrow in their next game at home at Thompson Arena, as they take on the Windsor Lancers at 2:30PM in the afternoon. Tickets can be purchased at westernmustangs.ca/tickets .
