Mustangs drop game 1 of the playoffs 6-2 to Toronto

Toronto, ON - The Mustangs dropped the opening game of the first round of their playoff series 6-2 with the Toronto Varsity Blues on Wednesday night.

The Varsity Blues come into the playoffs as the first seed in the West while the Mustangs finished in the eight spot,

The Varsity Blues were able to open the scoring with under two minutes to play in the period when Scott Kirton was able to jump on a rebound in front of the Western net to make it 1-0 and carry the lead into the intermission.

Mid-way through the second period the Mustangs would even things up. After a Varsity Blues turnover off the faceoff in Western zone, Anthony Stefano chased down the puck and chipped the puck to Kenny Huether in front of the net who buried it to tie the game at 1-1.

The Varsity Blues wouldn't be detered, as they would regain the lead on a Chase Olsen goal. Before the end of the period Kirton would be awarded a penalty shot and coverted to take a 3-1 lead into the second intermission.

After not being able to solve Toronto netminder Alex Bishop through the vast majority of the third period, The Mustangs elected to pull Luke Peressini from their net for the extra attacker but it didn't convert as the Varsity Blues would add an empty net goal to take a 4-1 lead.

The Mustangs would cut the lead to 4-2 with two and a half minutes left. Kolten Olynek would jump on a puck in the Varsity Blues blue paint and shovel it in.

The Varsity Blues would find the empty net again as Kirton scored to finish out the hat-trick just before the end of regulation to secure the game one win.

Western outshot the Varsity Blues 39-32 on the night.

The series now shifts back to Western on Saturday afternoon for game 2. Puck drop is set for 3:00pm and tickets are on sale now at westernmustangs.ca/tickets.
