LONDON, Ont. – The men's basketball team defeated the York University Lions 108-73 in a high-scoring match on Saturday night. Their second win of the weekend will bring them to a 14-7 record while the Lions fall to 8-23.
York University took the jump for a positive start to the match, but Western would make it so that they wouldn't see the ball again for another few minutes. Shiddo, Jenkins, and Walker were all quick to put points up for Western and it wouldn't be until the four-minute mark that Prince Kamunga would put York's first three points on the board. High in size and low in morale, York struggled to get competitive with the Purple and White, the open space resulting in some Mustang dunk-flair from Khan and Walker. Before the end of the quarter, Aryan Sharma would show up with 6 points to close it out at 34-11.
Guard MJ Forbes set the Lions off to a positive start to the quarter with 2 points, Deandre Pierre following up shortly after with some free-throws of his own. Mustang Cal Hager took the place of Jenkins on the court, and with a 25-point lead, found space to assist Sharma. With the shot-clock counting down, York's Robert Lamour put up a buzzer-beating basket to help boost the team's drive and bring them within 30 points of the 'Stangs.
Working off their own rebound, Yacine Loe of the Red and White was able to set the Lions off on the right foot with a smooth layup past Mustang defenses. In a similar fashion, Jenkins would seize the opportunity for two foul shots and bring the Mustangs to 60 points. Forbes returned to deliver some of his reliable free-throws, and at 7'0" feet tall, Dusan Prelo stood to provide some out-of-reach baskets to keep the York score rising. With thirty seconds on the clock, Sharma marked his return to the court with one last layup before the buzzer sounded.
Prince Kamunga carried the Lions into the fourth quarter, and with some backup from Nick Russell and Isaiah Moseley, pushed York into the 60's. With 6 minutes on the clock, Tyler Thomson and Omar Shiddo would get the 'Stangs to 98, and with one perfect three-pointer from Jerric Palma, break 100 points. Peyton Campbell pitched in with two free-throws, and with one last three-pointer, brought the score to its final of 108-73.
The men's basketball team will be returning to home court on Saturday, February 15
th against the Windsor Lancers. The game is scheduled to begin at 5:00 P.M EST.
