London, ON – A tough battle against Laurier Wednesday night saw the Mustangs drop to 1-2-2 on the season, as they settled for a 1-1 draw at home on Mustangs Field.
An early chance by Laurier remained the only noticeable part of the first moments of the game, as the teams then began to settle into the match.
Owura Boateng entered the game for Western and had an instant impact, as he was fouled in the box by the Laurier keeper and earned Western a penalty shot.
Anand Sergeant stepped up and converted, putting Western in front in the 24
th minute.
"I've taken a good amount of penalties before," said Sergeant. "I know generally where I'm going to go before I step up, and then it's just about executing it."
Laurier could not find an equalizer before the half but put on the pressure at the start of the second period of play. The push for a goal payed off, as the Golden Hawks scored a screamer off a rebound from a corner kick in the 69
th minute.
"Credit to them," said head coach Martin Painter. "It was a heck of a goal."
Both teams kept pressuring, as they felt there were more points to be won. Ultimately, nothing could be made from either sides offensive possession, and after exchanging shots over the crossbar in added time, the game was called.
"I don't think we were very good," said Painter. "At the end of the day, I don't think we did enough to deserve a win."
The Mustangs have struggled to find the back of the net so far this season and recognize the importance of creating more chances to find a way to win.
"We haven't conceded many goals this season and have controlled a lot of possession," said Sergeant. "The next step is turning that possession into chances."
"We got to start winning games," added Painter.
Western will look to do just that on Sunday afternoon as they travel to Waterloo for a rematch of tonight's game. Kick-off is at 3:15pm.
