Waterloo, ON – The Western men's soccer team travelled to Waterloo on Sunday afternoon to face off against a Laurier team who they tied earlier in the week.
The Mustangs started with a sense of urgency and put the Laurier back line under pressure, leading to a total of 7 shots in the first half alone by the purple and white.
Western took the lead in the 21
st minute courtesy of a Blake McGowan shot finding the back of the net.
Laurier countered with some offensive threat of their own in the second half, but the Mustangs were able to hold on and maintain the lead. McGowan's first goal of the season proved to be enough to claim a crucial three points for the Mustangs.
The purple and white travelled back to Waterloo Wednesday night, but this time to take on the 4-1-1 Warriors. It was a competitive matchup as both teams looked for three points. Waterloo opened the scoring right after the whistle blew signaling the second half.
Rather than getting discouraged, Western fought back and equalized 7 minutes later courtesy of Jamu Iluya.
Neither team could break the stalemate as the ninety approached and they both held on for one point.
The Mustangs will return home this Saturday as they take on the Warriors again, but this time on Mustangs Field. Kick-off is at 3:15pm.
