London, ON - The Western women's soccer team returned home Sunday afternoon for a rematch against the Gryphons at Mustangs Field and took all three points in the final minutes.
The Gryphons started off on the front foot forcing an early save by goalie Samantha St. Croix. Guelph continued to dominate offensive play the rest of the half, but Westerns defensive line remained calm and strong to keep a win within reach.
Western started the second half with a spark and put on the pressure but couldn't find the back of the net.
"At half time we had a talk, everyone came in with some new energy and the people who started just gave us the momentum to keep going," said Maddy Skinner.
The teams exchanged chances, and in the 65th minute Guelph had an opportunity to take the lead when a ball was crossed over for a shot at the open net, but it was ultimately misfired and saved by St. Croix.
In the dying minutes of the game, Medina Birani sent the ball up the left wing to Maddy Skinner who tried her luck from afar, placing it over the keeper into the top right corner for the lone goal of the match.
"There was really not a lot of people in the box and the goalie was pretty stepped out," said Maddy. "I was like 'If I kick it back post it either goes in or someone gets it.'"
"It was really good build up," head coach Martin Painter added. "Got into a good situation, a good crossing opportunity, and probably a little bit fortunate with the way the ball went in the net, but we worked hard to create that opportunity."
One final save from St. Croix secured the win, and cheers erupted from the team and supporters as the purple and white improve to 3-1-0 on the season.
"It was a tough game against a really good team," said Painter. "We have to give ourselves a chance to win and we did that."
After playing four games in ten days, the Mustangs have the week off and will return to action on October 13th against Laurier. Kick-off is at 6pm at home on Mustangs Field.
