WATERLOO, ON - The Mustangs and Laurier Golden Hawks faced off for the second time this season. This time on the road for Western as they picked up a 3-2 win, a score which held for over half of the game.
At first the game between the two teams appeared to be an offensive showcase as every goal had an answer it seemed.
Western started the game in a 1-0 hole but continued to pressure the Golden Hawk defense until they finally found a crack in the armour. Rookie Jake Sander scored his first goal in the OUA to lock the game at 1.
Â
Heading into the second period tied, once again Laurier took the lead. Western answered quickly by a high slot rebound by Sean Montgomery.
Â
After this goal the Mustangs found their footing and started to dominate the play. Establishing the cycle in the offensive zone was crucial in Western scoring the go ahead goal.
Â
Osmanski's goal proved to be enough for the team as he earned the game winning goal. Western defended well to secure the single goal lead.
Late in the game Western was staring down the barrel of a 5-on-3 penalty kill that the team managed their way through. Putting bodies and sticks in lanes was key in the Mustangs successful kill.
Â
Western played as a complete team with goals coming from 3 different players and grinding out a 1 goal lead for the win is an impressive feat early in the season that the team can surely build on.
Mustangs goaltender David Ovsjannikov stood on his head stopping 41 of 43 shots while maintaining a calm demeanor, this allowed the rest of the roster to simply limit inside shots and cover their man.
Western played a team game, and despite the lapses, managed to work their way to an advantage and hold on to it until the final buzzer.
These two teams will meet again this Saturday back at Western's Thompson Arena. The game is set for a 3pm puck drop. Tickets are available at
