Windsor, ON – The Western Men's Soccer team travelled to Windsor to face off against the Lancers on Alumni Field late Sunday afternoon in an eventual 5-1 comeback win.
Sitting in third in the West division standings, Western needed three points to remain in contention for the postseason.
The first half saw minimal action, with majority of the play remaining in the centre of midfield with the keepers facing no real tests. However, both teams took advantage of the minimal chances they created.
Windsor opened the scoring in the 39
th minute as a corner kick found a white jersey. Western equalized only a few seconds later, as right off the kick-off Western played up the right wing and crossed the ball into the box for Giorgio Prataviera to slot home. The teams ended the half with a goal apiece, an accurate representation of game possession and play.
With their season on the line, the Mustangs came out in the second half putting on the pressure. A Western corner kick in the 49
th minute taken by Anand Sergeant found the head of Tyrone Mulder to put the purple and white in front.
Looking to extend their lead, a through ball was sent to Jamu Iluya who ultimately saw his shot saved from a spectacular effort by the Windsor keeper. It didn't take much longer for Western to get their second goal of the half, as in the 75
th minute Charlie Bontis slipped past the Lancer back line and slotted the ball into the bottom left corner.
Western found two quick goals soon after, as Sergeant cleaned up a rebound off the post in the 77
th minute, and Aidan Bauer-Marr headed one into the net 2 minutes after. Even with the large lead, Western continued to put on the offensive pressure in search of more. Bauer-Marr thought he had his second, but another spectacular save was made by the keeper in the 87
th minute to keep the deficit to four.
A dominant second half performance ultimately propelled the Mustangs to a 5-1 win. With both Guelph and Waterloo securing victories of their own, Western remains in third place in the division, and see their season end with a great performance. Two wildcard spots were up for grabs, but the Mustangs miss narrowly based on goal differential.
With lots of new faces, the Mustangs had a fantastic season in which they continued to get better with each game and put up a great fight in an extremely tough division.
