Mustangs beat Windsor 2-1 and clinch playoff spot in final regular season game

Windsor, ON – An afternoon Halloween contest saw the Western Women's Soccer team beat Windsor 2-1 in their final regular season match of the year.

After a dominating performance Wednesday night against the Lancers, the Mustangs travelled to Windsor looking to claim another three points in their hunt for the postseason. Sitting in second place in the West division heading into this game, a win would solidify their spot in the playoffs.

The game started with high pace and end-to-end action, but soon settled as Western pressured the Windsor backline.

Third year Natalie Abbate stepped up to take a free kick just outside the 18-yard box, and beautifully slotted it around the wall and into the back of net in the 28th minute. It would only take the purple and white 3 minutes to double their lead.

Kiera Grein put forth a resilient effort as she saved the ball from going out of play and then crossed it onto the boot of Abbate, who scored her second of the half with a calm yet clinical finish.

Second half action saw Windsor come out with more grit and increased pace to create some significant chances that were lacking in the first half.

The Lancer crowd erupted when a through ball was sent to a Windsor player who had a clear chance at goal and was challenged and taken down in the box, yet the play did not warrant a whistle from the referee. A few minutes later, a Lancer forward slotted one onto the side netting, as the pressure began to pile on the Western defence.

A Windsor through ball in the 82nd minute led to a Mustang-Lancer one on one, with the Windsor forward holding on until she could cross the ball to her teammate for a tap into the Western net.

The physicality of the play continued to rise as Western looked to prevent a Windsor comeback in the final 10 minutes. The purple and white proved to be successful in holding off a valiant second half effort from Windsor and clinched a playoff spot while jumping to 1st in the division as a result.

The Mustangs are back on the pitch Wednesday night as they start their playoff run against the Varsity Blues from the University of Toronto. Kick-off is at 7pm at Western Alumni Stadium.
