Box Score Waterloo, ON – The Mustangs took to the road Friday evening as they travelled to Waterloo to face the Warriors, ultimately falling 3-0.
The Mustangs would have their work cut out for them in facing one of the top teams in the OUA, however they started strong and put forth an aggressive forecheck to commence the first period.
Despite not getting many chances, the Warriors would be the first to find the back of the net, as at 7:54 in the period Western netminder Kaitlyn Booth was beat blocker side.
Waterloo built off of the momentum from their goal and started stringing together some chances, but the Western blue line stayed strong and didn't allow the home team to add to their tally.
A Waterloo forward began driving to the net with 29 seconds left in the frame and would draw a hooking call from the Mustangs. The purple and white's penalty kill would be put to work to finish the period against the 2
nd ranked powerplay in the OUA.
Despite successfully killing off the powerplay to start the second period, the Mustangs couldn't get their fifth skater into the play in time as a Warrior tipped the puck in front to score their second of the game.
Western would counter with a 3-on-1 right after, but the shot was saved.
A few minutes later Western would be sent to the box yet again, but they were able to hold off their opponent successfully. Western's success on the kill came from their ability to prevent the Warriors from setting up, which even saw them generate a shorthanded chance the other way.
It wouldn't take long however for the home team to increase their score, and they did so in style. A Warrior passed the puck to herself off of the side boards and cut to the inside and passed it to a teammate in front of the net who tipped it in for a highlight reel play at 12:02.
A minute later they thought they scored a fourth, but the puck was stuck between the pads of Western's Booth.
Western would finish off the period with a successful penalty kill from a delay of game call.
The third period proved to be very similar to the first two for the purple and white. With 5:53 remaining, the Mustangs would be called for a 4-minute slew foot penalty and wouldn't be able to crawl back from the earlier deficit despite killing off another Waterloo powerplay.
Western drops to 0-3-2 on the season while Waterloo improves to 5-0-0 and reclaims top spot in the OUA West division.
The second half of the home and home series against Waterloo continues tomorrow November 27
th at Thompson Arena. Puck-drop is at 7pm.
